I Feel Like A Freak... Kind Of
I think we all have to find our own groove and what works for us. I also think we really do have to watch the junk and pick good choices. For me...I don't low carb. I was obsessing for a long time over carbs, calories and fats. I would spend hours reading labels in the grocery store and walk out nearly in tears because I was at a loss as to what to eat. Then I met with my NUT and she said concentrate on getting your protein and watching your cals ( I have to stay around 1000) and all else will fall into place. Ya know she was right. I eat my protein first, veggies second, all else third. I am one of those that if I want a treat I have it. What that means for me though is not looking for a treat, but if I am somewhere where say there is a celebration and there is cake...I have stayed in my daily goals, I have room for a bite, I have a bite. I don't eat the whole fricken piece, but I might have a 1/4 of the piece. Or say I am in the mood for a sandwhich, I might have one slice of bread. I rarely do either of these things, but if I do I don't beat myself up for it. I don't low carb but I stay away from foods that are really carby 95% of the time. I think you have to find what is doable for you. For me, I sucked at dieting, I would diet to the extreme and when I fell off the wagon I would fall hard. I am not going to diet anymore. Limiting myself to no treats, no bread, no rice for the rest of my life is not doable for me. Watching them, being mindful of them, I can do that for the rest of my life. Point is do you and only worry about you. :)
I'm currently 7 weeks out today. I'm just trying to figure out where people fit in all these carbs?!! I mean I eat 4-5 bites of something and I'm done. I couldn't eat another bite if I wanted to and believe me sometimes I want to. Because of this my meals have to be protein or I would never get in all my protein for the day. I do have to admit that my Dr.'s program is strict in that I am only suppose to have 3 meals per day of 2oz. and water and protein shakes in between, NO SNACKS. He doesn't prohibit carbs just says to keep them to under 50 grms per day. Where would I put them? So I guess I'm a freak too!

I dunno about you, but sometimes that sort of thing is -exactly- why I go to support groups when I can. I suppose that I came to terms a LONG time ago that I'm a freak.
In any case, it sometimes helps to see that other people do things differently and are still successful. If they AREN'T successful, then you learn what NOT to do. Regardless, you've still learned a lesson and have spent time with people who've been through what you've been through.
If that support group isn't giving you the support you need, is it possible to find another that will? 100 miles is an awfully long way to go with what seems like minimal payoff.
Good luck to you!

Good Morning Kelby!
Maybe that meeting wasn't a waste after all? It takes all different things to get us motivated and give us conviction to stay on track. It sure got good discussion going on OH this morning!
Obviously, you've found what works for you, and you're doing so awesome! Just stay on track and do what you've been!
Hugs,
Heidi

Sometimes I have to wonder if Nutritionist really know what they're talking about and recommending. I admit I have little faith in most of the advice they dispense.
My program limits carbs to less than 40 grams per day when losing weight. I could not meet that standard if I was eating pasta, rice, potato and bread. Carbs make me crave more carbs, they're mostly slider foods that I can eat a lot of and still be hungry. Like you, I no longer eat pasta, rice potato and only occasionally have a slice of sourdough bread.
I'm 18 months post-op and still limit carbs and plan to continue to limit my carbs.
The meeting sounds like a bust but at least you got to go shopping.
Continued success,
George
