worried
Hi,
Right now I am very overweight. I have asthma, bad left leg and diabetes with other things. I just joined the gym and having a rought time only doing the treadmill for 20 min a day. It's a start from not doing anything. My concern is will the exercise get better after I have the surgery the breathing and the moving. I guess right now I am just worried that I will never be able to move better.
Thanks for listening.
Susan.

I would first suggest that this is very individualized to your bodies condition, but, I have previously broken three vertebrae in a bad wreck which caused lasting dull pain under any excessive effort, knee pain anytime they bent, and hip pain every night in bed. Since about 2 weeks after surgery and the first 30 pounds or so, all my pain is near gone. I am loving that part of it. Exercise has actually become fun now.
It will absolutely be much easier the more weight you lose. Due to my arthritis it was hard for me to move, could barely walk, so i started out doing the water aerobics classes at my gym and then just swimming when not in a class. I loved it you should try that. You'll do great sweetie, i have no doubts. :o) jeani
I can only tell you my personal experience.
I too have/had asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, pain in my knees/back, etc etc. My diabetes is under control that i dont need any meds anymore, my blood pressure is under control and in the process of weaning off those pills. I take my inhaler ONCE a day now instead of every few hours. My knees dont hurt anymore, i do have back trouble but thats due to something else other than my weight.
SOooooooooo from a person that used to huff and puff going up one flight of stairs i say YES it will get better. Now i can climb sets of stairs and not even get out of breath! I love to go for walks and miss it days that i work long hours or that it rains.
Keep a positive attitude and everything will work out just great.

If 20 minutes is too much, then don't do it. Start with 5 minutes; then rest and do 5 more.
A year ago I had a bad fall, I'm in my 50's and have severe arthritis in my knees and other places too -- but I fell on my knees, hands and head. Not fun. I tore my quad muscle from the bone. NO exercise for one year. Have to let the muscle heal by itself to be strong enough for eventual knee replacement.
I had surgery in January. I have been doing chair exercises. (stupid, but gotta do SOMETHING) I was just cleared for physical therapy and minimal walking -- I started out with 2 5 minute walks a day at work in the parking lot --- last week.
This week I'm doing one 5 minute and one 10 minute walk a day.
Next week I can try 2 10 minute walks. I don't walk fast, and I walk with a cane; but a year ago I was riding a motorized scooter.
I COULD be frustrated, but instead....I'm excited to be making progress, and getting stronger. I may not set any records, but I refuse to hurt myself in the process. BTW my doctors are thrilled with my progress....(does the knee hurt less ? A bit less, but not as much as everyone told me it would....)
