My NUT said the same thing about the expansion and we don't want our sleeve to stretch!
Also, the thing that makes the bubbles is carbolic acid and the acid can wreak havoc on your stomach (ulcers etc).  That's why you can dissolve the tarnish off coins by putting them in coke.

I am 7 mo out, I sit a diet drink opened in re-frig for a few days, then I sip on it.................the gas blows up ur little tummy like ur bloated from the carbonation. If ur from the south you can find zatarains root beer mix by the spices, all you do is add water and sweetener of choice.

Hi Deb,
It seems every doctor and his staff have different ideas on this question. My Doctor said it has nothing to do w/the gas because it would not be on the eating/drink plan for a long time.  When I am 6 months out or longer I am allowed to have small amounts of diet pop infrequently. Like if I am at a social event. Not at home and only small amounts. He said that ALL pop gives you cravings for food therefore only drink it when you will be eating food soon after. I don't have to wait long before eating. Just 5 or 10 minutes.
Do what your doctor tells you to do. That is always the best plan
. I am not going to do this because I lived on pop for years and know myself well enough to know that I would want more and more and more. That's what got me into my mess in the first place. You know yourself. If it would create feelings of needing more think long and hard about letting it back into your life.

My doc. doesn't seem as strict as most. Take this with a grain of salt.

A couple reasons:

1.  The carbonation will stretch your sleeve.

2.  Soda is not good for you - period.

3.  You will need every bit of room in your sleeve to get in the nutritious foods you need.  Namely protein.  If it is full of soda/carbonation...where is your protein going to go?

Deb, I am sorry. I didn't realize we had two different surgeries. There are alot of things that are the same and some that are different. Just throw out my post. The other people that shared w/ you are more appropiate for your needs.   Mag

research this thoroughly. there are many differing opinions out there on this. from what I have read the bubbles will not stretch your stomach they will find an escape route(burping.)The sweet may cause cravings, know yourself and if that is a prob for you. I personally did not drink any for six months, I allow myself one Dr Pepper when I work third shift. I also allow myself one rum and coke when out with the girls. not often. but I do enjoy it when I have it. talk to your surgeon, ask questions and then do what works for you.

I also had wondered about this because my favorite drink pre-op was HMR powder, diet orange soda and ice in a blender.   mmmm made a orange dreamsicle smoothie.  But for now Im good without.

My doctor said the carbonation eats away at the staples that are on your stomach and can cause a leak before the stomach completely covers over the staples.  I have heard from others that you can drink it if you let it go flat.  however, I can not stand it flat so that is why I have decided to stay away from it altogether for the rest of my life!  I know it has no good food / nutrient value and I would rather put the good nutrients in my body. I read an article on a urology site that said that carbonated drinks scour out your bladder and can cause many bladder issues.  The first four weeks of nausea has enforced my thoughts even more about putting good nutrients in my body.
