Do calories matter- @ 18 days post-op?

Hey friends,

As I stated, I am 18 days pos-op.  I am at a "stall" and I am ok with that, since I have read of all you lovely people having them.

I get plenty of protein in each day, but fall short on calories and water.  My question is...at 18 days, should I be able to get in more calories than 400-500?  And I swear, if I drank the amounts of h20 you guys drink, I would NEVER eat!

I MAYBE get 40 oz a day.  I know, I know... I am working on it.  But what about the calories???

Thanks!

It does get hard to balance eating with drinking at this point. My fluids have decreased a little now that I'm eating mushy. I was drinking about 80+ but now its about 64 or so.

I'm averaging about 70 g of protein and between 600-700 cal. My surgeon's plan didn't specify a calories target, but on a sample menu for mushy stage, it says the menu averages 1100 cal/day. i COULD eat 1100 cal/day with some calorie rich foods, but for now, I'm not eating that much.

I shoot for 600-800 calories per day with 40 or less carbs and 100 grams protein. Also shoot for 64 oz liquids each day. Hope this helps.

What is a sample menu of your day, sleeve bro.?  I get about 4-500 calories, like 24 carbs and about 70g protein.  Water, as I said, MAYBE 40 oz.

Here is a typlical one.

Breakfast. Trader Darwin's protein shake  -  290 calories 39 grams protein 33 carbs
                    (with 2 cups skim milk)
Lunch: Lo fat cottage cheese - 1 cup -            160 calories 28 grams protein 10 carbs

Snack - 2 oz beef jerky                                        120 calories  28 grams protein 5 carbs

Dinner - Trader Joe's Salmon patty                    80 calories  17 grams protein 0 carbs

Total                                                                       650 calories    112 grams protein 48 carbs

64 oz fluid (water or unsweetened ice tea)

I also exercise - walk 1 1/3 mile each day for 234 calories burned off.
Don't hit every goal every time but I keep trying. Carbs is the biggest challenge to keep down.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help.

I am also 19 days out and my doc said I could have anything my stomach could tolerate. i have had both since two or three days out and have had no issues> She should defintely go with what her doc says and I know different docs have different opinions on what you can eat. I'm just gong with what my doc told me and what has worked for me.

I would talk with your nutritionist about what they want you to follow.  I just started my puree stage today and I am not calorie restricted (I am choosing to eat low cal, low carb and low fat).  But I am also eating such a small quantity of food that I probably got 300-400 Cal's in today.  I did not get in enough fluids today.  I am going to have to try to balance it better.  I was just very full after eating.  I'm doing 3 tbsp of purees breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I tried to do a protein supplement this evening but was not able to drink it all.  I think I only got around 30 oz of liquid in me today.

you are not unusual. it can take a while to work up to all tha****er. just keep at it and you will get there. as to calories, again in the early weeks it can be hard to get many. most surgeons say 600 to 800 in weight loss phase. what is most critical is protein. you need 70 g. so keep with the protein drinks and work up to the 70 g. again its hard at first but you will get there. don't worry about the calories being too low right now. it will change soon enough.  My post-op instructions say nothing about calories, only about how much protein and liquid to get in each day. I've been wondering the same sort of thing.
