Hmmm. Hard to say. I drank only broth and shakes for several days when I got home. Most docs will say do the best you can with protein early on - but make SURE SURE SURE you get your fluids in. I could generally manage about 1.5 shakes/day (30g protein) for the first week or so. Don't over-prepare - your tastes may change. Be sure to have popsicles on hand - they really help with liquids.

Any easier way to do this may be to get the Isopure drinks that contain 40g protein. You can either dilute them with your water or drink them straight. They are clear liquids (think gatorade, etc.) but contain a high amount of protein. That way all you really have to concentrate on is getting your fluid in and you'll be getting your protein at the same time. I got some at GNC.

Just don't buy a bunch of it you shouldn't need it for too long. That is the Best way to get both fluids and protein. Also I used UNJURY products They have a chicken soup that was my savior because I didn't want sweet so much.

I have been looking for these isopure 40 gram protein drinks but don't think they're available in Canada, or at least not in B.C. as best as I can figure out.
Anyone have any tips?

I forgot to mention a product called PB2 It is Peanutbutter that has the fat taken out and needs to be reconstituted. Great in shakes!

Everyone is different but I could barely drink broths because the sodium dried me out even more (remember, your fluid intake is very limited so sodium makes you extra parched)

My doc didnt want me to worry about protein for the first 3 days on clear liquids so I stuck with watered down gatorade, a bit of broth, crystal light, etc.

Days 3-14 were full liquid so I alternated drinking 1 ounce of protein shake at a time, skim milk, water, gatorade, etc..again my doc didnt demand I exceed 35g of protein a day for the first few weeks because you need 1 ounce of water based fluid for every gram of protein you consume for your kidneys to process it..many of us could not get more than 60-70 ounces in a day at first so I did half protein shakes half water during the day..

make sure you follow your docs plan but dont freak out if you dont get in a ton of protein at first- but you must at least take in water!!

I got these on the reccomendation from my NUT, 40 grams of protein in 12 ozs, they are clear and can be used during the first few weeks after surgery. I think it's pretty good option, even if you get one down a day you can pick up another 20/30 from other foods (such as adding a small amount of unflavored powder to your soups or water.

My doctor gave me a great recipe for a protein shake.  8oz skim milk, 1 packet Carnation instant breakfast (sugar free, blue box) and 1/2cup of egg beaters.  Provides 26grams of protein.
