You will get a big varying of answers on this one.  I lost 65 lbs in a year and stopped.  I also had only 83 to lose. P robably if he has alot to lose, the more he will lose. So close to my goal but haven't budged since June.

My Dr Said he see's no reason why I would not loose at least 100lbs if not more in the first year. I am out 7 months and down 90 lbs since surgery. I am confident I will see the 100 plus!

The first year is the most important and you will loose the most weight within that time.

I have been hanging out at at 85# lost for the past month or so and am 5 1/2 months out now.  Right around halfway point from my goal weight.

Four things for him to consider:  Where he starts, where he wants to be, how hard he works to get there, and then genetics.

It's going to vary for each person depending on how much weight they have to lose.

I was told by my surgeon's office they expect patients to have lost 60% of their excess weight at 6 months postop and 80-100% by a year.  You'll sometimes see it expressed as 60% EWL or 80% EWL.  It's caluclated as follows:

Weight @ surgery  - weight for 'normal' BMI = Excess Weight

Weight lost/Excess Weight = % EWL

For me it looks like this:

259 (Surgery weight) - 140 (Normal BMI) = 119 Excess  Weight

108.4 (WL since surgery)/119= .91 or 91% EWL to date.
