so i feel like i was pretty prepared to go into this surgery.  had all my nutrition stuff down, researched surgeon, hospital, knew several people who had WLS.  and NOT ONE PERSON told me "beware of constipation issues after surgery".  went to the colorectal surgeon today and was diagnosed with 2 fissures which are so painful they want to make me bang my head into the wall and knock myself out.  finally after 2 weeks of pain i will have medicine today to hopefully take the pain away until they heal.  if not, he said surgery in a month.

seriously.  i'm only 6 weeks out.  thought i would at least be able to enjoy recovery for a little bit longer.

sorry.  cranky today after being violated by the dr.

Yeah, folks need to know this is a common problem.  I take benefiber daily, but still don't have nearly the regularity I had before surgery.

Back in "my day," as we old people say, ha ha, we talked about it way more.  Fiber supplements, milk of magnesia, stool softeners, etc etc, used to be common topics of threads, but I don't see them much any more.  I was taking up to eight Colace tablets a day to keep semi-regular.

About a year or so ago, I started having restless leg problems.  Somebody told me magnesium tablets helped with that.  Started taking one, then two, then ... lots!  Whoa.  No more constipation issues!!!  I got completely off the Colace, take six magnesium tablets a day which fix the restless leg problem, and juice up my innards!

Two for the price of one!

I add fiber to everything (shakes, yogurt).  I am extremely irregular.  I took too much Miralax yesterday though.  Oh well.

I wish I had known to start taking stool softeners immediately after surgery, or hell, even before. I didn't have a BM for 3 days before surgery, and 7 days after. That first BM was the worst day post op by far. I started stool softeners and fiber and lots of water and it helps, but I still battle with constipation 5 months out.

But, between constipation and GERD, if this is as bad as it gets, I'll gladly take it over being MO.

I'm sooo sorry about the fissures. I hope you won't need surgery to fix it.

Agreed.   I've NEVER dealt with constipation issues before surgery.....but I do now.  I also have to take a stool softener or Benefiber daily, which is enough to combat the issue.  Good luck & I hope the fissures resolve soon and that you're able to find relief once you find a fiber regiment that works for you.

I haven't had surgery yet but I'm on a low carb diet and have the same problem sometimes.  I find probiotics like DanActive help sooo much.  Might be worth a try?  I'm sure there are others with better answers.  I'm not sure if after sleeve you can eat apples??? That also helps me for some reason.  I even use magnesium citrate if I feel really backed up...but of course you'd have to ask your Dr.  Watch it with the magnesium...it'll make you go forsure.  Also hydration is a big issue the bowels tend to slow down when you aren't hydrated.

I use Miralax as well as a Colace every other day or so. Iron pills will block you up as well. But I make sure that I have anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of ORIGINAL Fiber One a day. It's got so much fiber that it counterbalances the carbs. It's a small "carb price" to pay in order to be regular.

Note to anyone having any surgery-

Surgery (of any kind) causes constipation. It takes a few days for the peristalsis to start back in your intestines..So it is wise to start stool softeners the day before surgery and continue them after for a while.

Pain medicine also causes constipation, so on top of what happens from surg, you then have to contend with this.

And finally, VSG gives limited fruit, veg, and fiber intake and thus...can cause bowel issues.

So the bottom line is, taking the stool softener until you are more regular is wise..

Though bowel issues do not happen to everyone, I havent had any problems like this except immediately post op, though I know many are affected throughout their VSG journey. It depends on the person and their plumbing!

....and just for the flip side of things....I had bought the stool softeners just in case, but for me, it was the runs for the first six weeks straight.

I have heard though that adding some healthy oils back into your diet can help the constipation.

I have found a good balance for myself now, and keep that balance by eating oatmeal in the mornings for breakfast, it seems to keep my runs at bay....

Everyone is different, and things can change up on you....

Much luck !
