Are you still able to take pills after the surgery?

I take a few anti-depressants and sleep aid and was wondering if I can still take them after the surgery? Some are in capsule form, but others aren't.

Yes, you can.  I am 14 months out from sugery and have very recently started taking Ambien, Trazodone and Celexa.

Yes, but you may need a pill splitter if they are big honkers. Rule of thumb my doc gave me was that if the pill was bigger than your pinkie nail, split it. I'm trying to get most of mine in either chewable form or liquid.

Some are also available in "sprinkle form" where you can open the pill and mix it in something

Good question and you need to discuss this with your surgeon ahead of time AND the hospital admission RN when they call you.

What I was told ..the pill should not be bigger in diameter than the HEAD of Lincoln on a penny..he rather we cut them with a pill cutter. AND the diameter of your sleeve is size of a dime..then later the size of a nickle. So capsules have to be approved, opened into applesauce for ex or get the liquid form until you can swallow pills again.

Later you should be able to swallow them just fine.

Good luck~let us know how you're doing ok?

Hugs, Jan

My surgeon's rules were to crush all pills for the first 6 weeks.

I've been told by my dietician's that if it's the same size or smaller than an extra strength tylenol then it should be fine.

I was told I could take all pills 3 days after surgery. I was splitting bigger ones and now don't have to.

My surgeon has no restriction on pill taking. In fact, I was given pills in the hospital and took them with no problem.

When I came home I had no restriction on pills out of the hospital.  As long as I could swallow them I was allowed to have them.
