Some folks do not "need" it for medical purposes but use it to manipulate their hunger.  So, know the pros and cons of everything before dabbling in it recreationally.  For me, I tried to see if it would stave off my hunger, because I do still get hungry, but it only kept it away for maybe an hour longer, and the cons of it (for me) outweighed just one more hour of not hungry.  Oh, or the freaking concrete gut and angry anus (helloooo constipation!).  So, just make sure you understand the good and the bad of *any* medication and how it reacts with what you are taking (supplement wise) and then make a decision that is good for you!

I started having acid reflux around the time I started soft food - so maybe at 6 weeks out or soon thereafter.  My surgeon makes very small sleeves and said it's a somewhat common thing to need a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) for reflux after surgery.  I

So, not everyone needs it...but it's not uncommon to need one either!

Proton Pump Inhibitor - there are different types of antacid type medications - PPIs are supposed to block production of acid in the stomach. Other types will help deal with it after the fact (like pepcid/tums, etc)

I think the practice of some docs is to start patients on a PPI immediately postop. Ive seen a lot of people not get them or told to take them, and then I see a lot of "OMGZZZ im 2 weeks post op and starving" - i can guarantee you that ravenous hunger is the result of acid production in the stomach.

Thanks for sharing Master Frisco!  I just found out recently from my best friend the nurse that you are supposed to take the PPI on an empty stomach!  Gr.. no wonder it hasn't been working well for me.  Plus I usually drink coffee all morning long, and wash my PPI down with some.  I haven't figured how I'm going to wait so long to have my coffee after taking my PPI since I'm a coffee junkie! :(

Hmmm never thought about the correlation between my PPI and morning coffee. Maybe I need to take my PPI as soon as I get up. (well, I need to cut the coffee but until then...)

Here's the skinny on the PPI and when to take them.  All PPI's should be taken on an empty stomach.  That is in the literature but most people do not know.  It has to do with the coating on the medications.  They need the "virgin" stomach acid for breaking down the outer covering and then they dump into the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) where the absortion happens.  If you take it with food, it doesn't break down properly and then the food is being absorbed and the PPI is then competing for the "receptors" for absorption.  You, therefore, are not getting the benefit of the medication.

If you have to take your PPI after you have eaten, you need to wait at least 2 hours after you have eaten, and at least a minimum of 30 minutes before you eat (an hour is optimum).
