Hi, I have PCOS and do not have problems with my cycle, but with losing weight. I can restrict right now back to 600 calories if it would work, but it doesn't. I cannot lose weight on my own. I am looking to get the Sleeve and was wondering if anyone knows why i would benefit from it if i can restrict calories right now.
I am going to see the surgeon tomorrow, but it is just something on my mind.
Thanks!

Wow... you can really consistently restrict your calories to 600 a day without having anything to curb your hunger? There's no way I could have done that before vsg, especially for an extended period of time.

I'm honestly not sure exactly how the sleeve would help PCOS other than restricting the amount of food we can eat. I do know that, post vsg, most people prefer to make the most of their new tool by drastically limiting carbs, which is also supposed to help with PCOS.

Best of luck to you... hopefully someone with a better understanding of how PCOS is affected by all of this can give a more succinct answer than I just did

Just my opinion, but it seems everyone can restrict calories to 600 for "some period of time" ... but if you are eating 600 calories a day and exercising... for months... there is no way you wouldn't lose weight. The pattern generally is... you do 600 calories religiously for days, even weeks, see nothing major happen and go back to past habits. Your body knows that the 600 is only temporary... but with the sleeve you can extend this to the time needed to see the loses.

If your metabolism is truly slow enough that a sustained 600cal diet, lower in carbs doesn't produce weight loss for you, I would not consider the VSG as it would likely not work. I would only consider the DS as that indicates you are in serious need of lifelong malabsorption.

Edited to add, I have read of several people that have this issue.. and yes, your body may be highly resistant to losing because of it. Consider the long term as well as the short term.. if you cannot lose at 600cal, that means you must gain easily too.. for me, even lifelong- I don't see myself eating under 900/1000cals a day. If your metabolism due to hormonal reasons is broken, you *may* lose a little early on with the VSG, but could you live life-long at that very low calorie range? Probably not. The DS would give you your best fighting chance at having a more normal metabolism and having a lifestyle that would be satisfying, please make sure you read up on it - DSfacts.com is a great place to start.. it is worth traveling for.. please consider this over the RNY which only has a very limited malabsorption period, and has other issues due to bypassing the pylorus.

I have a friend with pcos and she has the same issue as you. We have been going thru this process together but I am going to be sleeved and she is having roux-n-y. You may want to consider that as it has mal- absorptive features and restrictive vs. just restrictive of sleeve. I recommend you speak to your doctor. Good luck

If you can restrict back to 600 calories a day, and stay there, I don't understand why you do not lose weight.

A question for your doctor, or some kind of specialist like an endocrinologist.

I have PCOS.

I am on medication for it.  I lost 71 pounds on my own before the sleeve.

Losing majorly helps PCOS symptoms!

Yes, is is harder for those of us who have PCOS to lose weight, but we cannot give up on it.  We just have to work harder.  If we don't, we will end up with diabetes, and other problems.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I have an apt with the surgeon on the 24th. I did learn something since I posted this.... the hormone in our stomach.. the same as the "hunger" hormone... it controls Insulin as well.. which is a direct connection to the PCOS. So that is why it works.. the same reason diabetes are no longer after surgery. So it started to make sense.

And no, i couldn't live off from 600 calories now, working out and with this stomach size.. I found out I had PCOS because I was on a very strict diet and work out regimen (with dr supervision) and he was the one that made me get tested more and go to an endocrinologist because there was no drop in weight, and i really am not a cheater. I want it too bad for myself.

I will see the surgeon on the 24th and discuss but I had already went to one surgeon that knew i had pcos and recommended the sleeve. I really do eat well and due to the fact I am so young, was worried about becoming anemic if i did RNY.
Let the journey continue :)

Thank you for your support as well!
