Issues...Thyroid or Surgery?
VSG on 04/04/12
I am almost 5 weeks out and haven't lost anything in 3 weeks. I am tired, irritable, and just plain don't want to do anything. Even when I walk I don't get the high like I should? I am wondering if anyone else has thyroid issues. I did go get a blood test done and I went down 3 points! Which is HUGE! I have been around the same for years. So now that I have changed, it worries me. I am still within normal range, but WAY lower than usual.
I have a Dr. appointment next week but I am cranky and impatient!! Anyone who has experience with this, please help. I feel like 3 days I am good, then 1 or 2 days, this is all a joke and nothing's working. And the 3 days I am good are still a struggle and require caffeine!!
Help!

I developed a little thyroid issue at about 1 yr post op. My endocrinologist said I don't really qualify for full mess, but he prescribed me a small dose to support my weight loss 25mg of thyroid a day, it was such a small amount, but it did kick up my energy and help me lose another 20lbs. I am afraid to get tested again cause i don't want to lose my "support" hehe

Thanks! I have had the same levels for 6 years or so - since surgery it went down - but usually doesn't necessarily mean dosage change, but I think with all I am feeling hormonally I might need something changed!!
Thanks for the post :)

Honestly, I wouldn't worry and jump the gun yet.
1) It's really common to stall out after surgery - many folks stall out around the third week. VERY normal.
2) It's also really normal to feel tired and cranky. Your biochemistry is shifting from a fat-storing to a fat-burning homeostatis setting, and this takes a couple weeks. This happens to most of us too.
3) Your thyroid, while decreased, is still in the normal range.
4) Not sure what "high" you're referring to when walking. Like an endorphin high?
The first month is the toughest. To me, what you describe is part of the regular journey. I'd really try to wait it out a couple more weeks - I'd expect your weight to continue to fall, your energy and attitude to improve a bit. Keep up your liquids and protein in the mean time.
Good luck!

Thank you. Yes I meant the endorphin high. I think the reason I am worried is because when my meds are off, this is how I feel. Depressed. And I have a sensitivity to it, so it's REALLY bothering me. I have read and encouraged others even about their stalls but I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Especially when my TOM is coming up AGAIN! I feel like time is NOT on my side.
I appreciate the advice. I just wish this situation didn't feel so unsuccessful. It's hard to measure how good you are doing without weight loss?!?

Hey -
I've never gotten an endorphin high from just walking! And honestly, I'm running 5Ks and don't really get them. Not sure you should expect a high from walking - but keep doing it, it's really important!
Yeah, stalls suck - it's one thing to know, another to live. Just have faith and commiserate a little - like i said, this happens to most of us - I stalled out in my third week, I felt tired as hell (which in turn made me cranky) and everything turned around and worked out just fine. But to measure how you're doing, weight loss is one component - sure, the most important, but there are other ways to measure success. You can successfully get all your water in, get all your protein in, and get your exercise done. So there's still some good ;)

Okay - thank you!! Trying to focus on the positive. I think that's why I am so unable to though, cause it's usually easier for me. So since I can't just turn it around on my own, it's basically ******g me off!! LOL!!
I think the endorphin high I feel is just a little lighter on my feet, not fatigued and wanting to sit on the couch for a couple hours!!

Are you taking your measurements?? Are you taking progress pics??
I tend to get very scale focused and forget about these other indicators. For two months I only lost 2 pounds but I also went from a size 12 pants to an 8!
As far as the thyroid, I've been on 50 mcg of synthroid forever. I went in for regular testing fully expecting needing a dosage adjustment, nope all well within the normal range. You don't want meds to be too high and flip you into hypothyroidism either - lots of nasty effects from that too!
As Ruggie said, this depression is very very common. Hell, your whole world has been turned upside down emotionally, physically, psychologically, no one is going to remain perfectly stable and happy through all that!!
Hang in there!!

No - I am not taking pics or measurements. I feel dumb doing it. I hate looking at myself with or without clothes. Lol! And I've lost 30 pounds and still wearing the same clothes :( They are looser and I can tell my booty and belly have gone down, but nothing to warrant going shopping or anything. No one even knows I had surgery, or that I am eating differently or correctly. It sucks!!
Thanks for the encouragement, I just hate this! When you have battled this stuff for so long to now have it back again and not feel like you can change it is irritating!!
I appreciate your help! I need to try something.

Perhaps you go measure yourself now? Also, have you ever talked to a counselor? Maybe they could help sort out some of these feelings.
Its no wonder you are in a funk, you won't look at yourself, have no real measurement of your progress and it sounds like no support.
If no one knows you had surgery, how are they going to support you??
Speaking of support, does your surgeons group have a support group? Why don't you go to that??
Hang in there but do try and make some little changes to make your world a better place!
