The poster had RNY as noted.  Plus, the answer sounds like complete crap to me.  Pardon me for being blunt.

I know may rny patients from my groups.  While they o go through changes, just like we will, as they get further out, they don't automatically gain 20-30 lbs back.  Part of what we have to learn in weight loss is WEIGHT MANAGEMENT. That means weighing ourselves regularly, sticking to our diet and exercise plans, and adjusting when things go too far one way or the other.  Primarily this means holding ourselves accountable and using our tools correctly.  Not blaming weight gain on intestinal flora.

There are women in my groups who had rny 8 and 10 years ago.  Both look fantastic, exercise, and keep the weight off.  The play with 5 to 10 lbs either way, but they manage that.  We are no different than the lifelong diabetic managing glucose, we have to stay mindful of our obesity and our plans.

Thank you for your detailed response. You make so many wonderful points--as always!

And this is actually a good conversation for me to be having.  My sister's good friend had RNY and several things my sister said to me reflect the difference between the two surgeries.  Since I'm going to be spending time with her next week, this is a good thing for me to be aware of, so I can explain why my cir****tances are different.

It doesn't seem to be too unusual for us to have maybe ten pounds of bounceback after bottoming out, particularly for those who follow the "full speed to goal" strategy of not changing their routine until hitting goal, rather than easing into goal. Most natural systems will also experience some overshoot after a rapid change before settling into a new setpoint.

Longer term (as in 5,10,15 years) it is not too unusual to see 20-30 pounds of gain unless one is exceptionally diligent - just like most "normal" people as they age. At our last support group meeting there were several 10-15 year veterans attending, and 20-30 pounds over their post surgical minimum was fairly common (including that fairly common 10 lb or so initial overshoot before they settled into their long term weight.) What is also fairly common is the observation of regaining 10, 20, 30 pounds and then being able to lose it again by going back to basics and cutting out the crap that has crept back into the diet. One vet credits her dog for helping to lose a regain - the dog was always there to mooch off the crackers that she would settle down with in the evenings, and not wanting to succumb to feeding the dog something unhealthy for it, she got rid of the crackers - dumped the weight, too.

When I realized that my beloved yellow lab's weight gain was causing him pain in his arthritic hips, I put him on a diet.  He not only lost weight, but got his bounce back!  Yes, seeing that did influence me.  I'm also aware that I have taken better care of my dogs' weights than my own!

I need to find an in-person support group, I think.
