Thats WHY I started a ^^ HAIR LOSS in VSG blog years ago!! lmao
IF we can get 1 PRE-OP to RETHINK all the lies thousands of us VSGrs have been told about hair loss and how it happens and WHY not just what its called.....use, try, look at other treatment modalities PRE-OP starting with the 2 week pre-op liquid diet...thru the critical stage... I betcha we'll see some kind of CHANGE.....but until that happens...hair loss in VSG posts.. will continue to FILL ~ 1/4 of this forums pages.
Biotin, ^^protein intake, Zinc, Selenium, Nioxin, Monoxidil, Rogaine, Hair Nails Skin, $hampoo systems, Protein Conditioners ...need to be ELIMINATED from our vocabulary...and LAID TO REST as a treatment consideration, ....thousands of us BEFORE YOU young uns..... BTDT.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results....einstein
And your theory as to the cause of WLS hairloss is what? I've had general anesthesia and not had hl, I absolutely believe the protein, calorie restriction, vitamins and drastic changes in our body have a lot to do with it. I spent 2 years of my life researching hair loss. Nioxin does nothing but make hair APPEAR thicker SOMETIMES and clear scalp buildup. It says on the bottle that it is not for hair loss. Rogaine (which has the active ingredient monoxidil, they are not 2 diff things) is only for male and female pattern hair loss or AGA (androgenic alopecia). That is the only FDA approved hairloss treatment though you must use it permanently in order to keep the hair you regrew with it. Also, it is not for telogen effluvium which is our type of hair loss. All of the other shampoos do nothing. Our hair falls out because of what is happening inside of our bodies not outside. Biotin only increases the production of hair in the active (awake) hair follicles. When we lose our hair the way we do it's because a bunch of our hair follicles go into the resting phase all at once. Biotin won't do anything for those follicles, only for the follicles that are in the growing phase. It also won't stop any of the follicles from going into the resting phase. And biotin absolutely does help the ACTIVE hair grow because when I took it my damn body hair went crazy and my hair grew quickly. That is the same thing that the hair/skin/nails vitamins do.
Anyway, I highly doubt you can prevent WLS hairloss.

I think it has something to do with the trauma and healing process. Since I was nothing by mouth for over two months being fed through a bag I can tell you that I was on 1200-1500 calories the entire time which gave me the exact vitmanins, minerals, and protein as well as fluids I needed and I still lost hair from about 4 months out till 8 months when I started growing back. I fully believed it was lack of protein that caused it but I am unsure now since I was only really without for a few weeks. Maybe that was enough? Since my experience was a bit different with the same result I thought I would share since I had the same result.
I agree that plays a part but I disagree that the calories don't play a part. If you were 385 your body was used to a whole lot more than 1200-1500 calories a day. That is a very dramatic decrease regardless of the fact tht you were able to sustain life. I do agree that protein plays a part though. Your hair follicles react approximately 3 months after the "shock" which means that whatever they were reacting to happened consistently between month 1 and month 5...
I could have taken these same pics!! I'll be a year out next week (
) and I still have to use a hair trap in my shower. I have to dig it out of the sink drain though, which is way disgusting.
I agree with everyone, this is great for the newbies to see so once (if) it happens to them it's not such a shock.
