What does your doc think of OH
I don't know my doc's view but was warned by his PA to be careful of this site because of all the people trying to figure out how to still eat like they used to after surgery. I haven't seen that. I've seen people write about their struggles. He also said some of the support groups meet at restaurants. Why would anybody have a WLS meeting at a restaurant?
A support group at a restaurant - that might be the only kind I'd go to if I found one!!
I dont think people here are TRYING to eat like a pre-op - maybe some do because they havent addressed their issues or are just plain ignorant, but short of that video with the 12" sub...not too many people actually try to do that.
I think OH should definitely come with a warning - you will get great advice here, you will get horrible advice and everything in between. You will see people who know what they are talking about based on legit research and people who just offer their opinions based on...?? So, you have to be able to sort out all the whacky advice and info you might see here, and you also need to be able to seperate reality from online - if you are offended easily by stuff online, be careful. Gotta take stuff around here with a grain of salt.

My doctor's nurse told me to stay away. I am having revision surgery on 8/6 and am freaking out. I keep calling and asking questions that I read about on OH and she told me that she likes that I am asking questions but to keep myself for stressing so much I should stay away till after surgery. I can't help myself! I like to read peoples successes and and to get info on what I am about to get myself into.
I never bothered telling my surgeon about OH or any other internet forums.
I'm smart enough to know that it's the internet and to not take anything for the "gospel".
As for support groups, one of the local support groups has a monthly "Greet and Eat" at local eateries. . .
I don't attend and never went back after 1-2 "meetings' because of all the coddling, enabling and ******g/moaning about not being able to eat craptastic food and drinking milkshakes but complaining about not ever getting to goal or gaining.

As with any website on the whole wide Web, take everything with a grain of salt. I've found this site to be a good place to check in, to share my experience and to be supportive of others, but I'll take my doctor's advice over anything I read here, period.
My surgeon thinks OH is "okay", but that there's a lot of misinformation and second guessing, which I've seen.
I'd meet up with a support group at a restaurant. It's the perfect place to talk about food. :)

I'd meet at a restaurant too .. what a great social tradition it is to gather and have a meal. It doesn't mean you have to eat poorly and I would hope that no one would if it was a weight loss surgery gathering. I've seen pics of the various meet and greets that have taken place in the OH community at restaurants and for the most part it looks like healthy meals I have seen in the photo's, though I do seem to remember someones plate had french fries on it which made me go "hrmmmmm" .. but maybe that person didn't eat them.

I don't see a problem with meeting at a restaurant for a support meeting. Part of this process is dealing with normal life situations. I'm not going to avoid going to dinner with family and friends for the rest of my life. However I will go to the restaurant and order something that will not keep me from getting to my goal. I have no problems finding something that is acceptable for me to eat. I immediately put some of it in a to go box and limit what I take in. I have extreme social anxiety and it would be bad for me to limit my outings just because of the food. I actually do better dealing with it than staying home.
It's the internet. You have to be careful what you listen to but at the same time I find this site to be a better support group than my doctors "support group". I got HORRIBLE information from the nutritionist heading the group. I will not go back to that group.

The program director/FNP recommended OH at the first seminar i went to. as someone said, it's the internet and you have to be smart enough to separate the wheat from the chaff. some people are struggling (well everyone is to certain extent i would say!) and some people do just eat crap and less of it. most of us are trying to change the way we eat forever and are someehere on that path. if it's freaking you out prior to surgery, it's probably a good idea to give it a rest. if you find it helpful to have other people to "chat" with who have had the same struggles and victories (and i do) then come on in!
i haven't found local RL support groups to be helpful -- even the one at my center. as for meeting in a restaurant -- meals together are fun, eating with others who have figured out how to eat out successfully is actually a good thing i think, and it's also probably not a good idea until you've gotten relatively far into the process of weight loss!
hope this help!

The NUT at my doc's office told me about it and said it would be a great site to get support. Since joining I find myself having to tell myself at times to ignore what some people say only because my doc said something different. This site has saved me at times because I have been able to get recipes and advice I things that do pertain to me. I love it!!! So does my Nut!!!
