People gain weight back more easily with VSG
I ran into an old friend today who had RNY about 10 years ago. I was so excited to tell her that I was having surgery Monday. She said she doesn't like the VSG because people gain their weight back more easily after that surgery.
Kind of bummed she thought that was ok to say after this is obviously a done deal. I am not offended whatsoever and I am sure there is no hard evidence of this, just not what I wanted to hear.
However, it does make me that much more aware that I need to be mindful forever and always for the rest of my life. She also told me that at one point she had gained 60+ back (she lost it since). Sigh.

Actually research show the opposite to be true. RNY malabsorbtion last only about 2 years and their pouch does stretch considerably...while our fundus is removed preventing too much stretch. Yes I am sure you can gain back weight if your careless as with all surgeries. I have stalled for more than a couple months, but am getting back on track with my fitness pal and exercise. fortunately 9 months out and very little hunger and still restriction. Although I will caution you to lose the most possible in the first 6 mos...when your tummy heals you will be able to eat more and your loss will slow dramatically if your not mindful!!

I agree with tillmadd,
I know of someone who had the RNY and that was the case with her. She did great at first, but gained her weight back and now she is heavy again. I think with any of these surgeries, like everyone says, they are a tool. If you are not following the rules of the tool, you will gain or stop losing. I like what previous post said as well..... well you just have to prove her wrong now!
When people tell me things like that to discourage me. I turn it around and use it for fuel to try even harder to prove them wrong. LOL. Good luck with your journey, no doubt you Will succeed!

This is one of those myths out there, like saying people with RNY can eat anything and not gain weight. Just because someone has had bariatric surgery doesn't mean they know anything.
Besides, there is an almost religous zealoutry in some peole who just want to say "my surgery can beat up your surgery".
Regardless of surgical procedure, the people who are the most successful are those who commit themselves to a lifestyle change, accountability, and aftercare.

I firmly believe that you can be successful with any surgery. It's more about what you want and what your needs are. I didn't want or need the things that come with RNY, I have VERY strong feelings about the band, so VSG was for me. I'm only 14 months out but I feel like I'm getting a grasp on what I need to do to be successful long term.
You can gain back with ANY surgery. Heck, you can never lose a pound after the first month if you really put your mind to it. This is why I keep hammering on about mental health. I dunno about the rest of you, but I certainly didn't reach 375 pounds just because I was hungry.

I think it totally depends on the person. My uncle had the bypass about 10 years ago and was SO sick we thought he was going to die. He vomited all the time. He lost weight fast but after 5 years his old habits (he was a grazer, he ate constantly, you almost never saw him without food) got the best of him and he gained probably half of it back. He is not as big as he was but he's still considered obese.
I was worried about this surgery too when I saw the statistics but now that I read the boards here it seems that the sleeve is what you make it. I for one want to lose 200lbs and that is my goal. I won't stop until I do. Luckily, the sleeve is a tool that we can use if we want too!
