Full ?

I am 4 days out from surgery.  How do you know when you are full?  I feel the same all the time; most of the time I feel hungry.

You aren't going to feel full until you're eating puréed or mushy foods. Liquids just slide through your sleeve, which is perfect for right now.

How are you doing at getting your fluids in? What does your surgeon's plan say for you to be drinking/eating right now?

After I posted this message last night I pulled out some of my paperwork and I did see that I was not getting in enough liquids.  I was focusing on protein and not worrying abou****er.  I have made myself a chart to keep track.  I will not worry about the full feeling; I will concentrate on getting enough liquid and protein in each day.

I was on clear liquids for the second day after surgery, I'm now on liquid; e.g. protein drinks, broth, water, crystal light, popsicles, diet jello, and creamed soups.

Thanks for your input about not feeling full.  I was expecting to feel full because I had read how fast you feel full, but I guess it makes sense when your not getting anything but liquid you won't get that full feeling.

I'm wondering if you are really hungry.. I wouldn't think you'd be truly hungry for a while bc you have to retrain your brain..

You don't.  You have raw nerves.  At this point you need to measure your liquids and later your foods.  Do not rely or get used to feeling full.

You can hurt yourself right now trying to "feel full" because you don't have much sensation down there right now.

You likely will feel hungry for sometime until the ghrelin has a chance to leave your system. 

I was hungry on liquids and mussy stages. I ate measured amounts of food only. Once on "real" food I am not hungry really just sometimes empty. I dont experience the same full feeling that I had pre op. In my opinion, dont aim for the full feeling any longer..go for satisfied. A meal for me is 2 oz of protein. Thats it. Most the time I dont feel empty for 3-5 hours if I eat protein. I normally eat 3 meals a day, a shake for snack, and another low carb veggie snack/cheese stick/2 oz of protein if I still need calories. I avoid carbs because I feel hungry and get crazy food cravings. I also take a ppi twice a day. I never felt like I had acid but it has made a big diff in not feeling hungry. Also, if someone around me is eating late at night or snacking on something that I like or cooking something that smells delish ...I have head hunger. You have to learn the diff between real hunger and head hunger. That is pretty tricky because it seems so real! Good luck!

While you are on liquids or mushies, you may ever feel full - you may not want much, but you may not have much feeling to indicate fullness.  Once you move on to dense protein - like chicken - you will know!
