I hate protein shakes! Can I do a bar instead??

I really do hate them.  I can't get through a quarter of a shake without almost throwing up.  I have tried a new brand/flavor almost daily for the past four weeks and still nothing is tolerable.  I have doctored them beyond recognition and still no luck- I can always taste protein grossness.  With all that said-- What do you guys think about protein bars?? Most seem to be high in carbs but I found a few like LUNA PROTEIN and ATKINS that don't seem too bad and..... I can eat them!

So what do you guys think.... good idea to incorporate them for added protein or am I fooling myself into thinking they are healthy?

Candy Bars in disguise! Seriously!

The only one I would consider is the Quest Bar.

Are you on solids yet? Seems early for solids, but maybe I'm wrong. could be you're just starting them.....

I would consider trying to get your protein from sources like cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt and other high, high protein foods that are suitable for your post op stage,  rather than go to a protein bar. Just my opinion.

I started solids about a week ago so I'm still focusing on softer protein like fish, very soft chicken and cottage cheese. Just looking for something that I can throw in my purse and take with that's quick, easy and packed with protein and does not require a cooler.  Natural/homemade Beef/turkey jerky would be perfect, but too tough at this point.

Candy bar in disguise is exactly what I'm worried about.  I'm still learning to read labels so I figure it's better to ask what others think than to start bad habits.  Thanks for your input!

I agree with kairk!  You really need to look at the nutrition label.  A lot of those Luna and Atkins bars are full of carbs.  It is amazing what you find out when you read the labels.  I am barely getting down the two shakes my nut wants me to continue witth.  So it is a challenge to get the 70 grams of protein in.  It's a good thing I like hummus, cottage cheese and refried beans.

My dietician said no way to protein bars. She said they just aren't the same value. In a pinch, once in a while, fine. But not every day. Have you tried Premiere Protein Shakes? They are per-mixed and can be found in bulk at Sam's Club. The chocolate ones taste like chocolate milk. No "gross proteiness" lol. Good luck!

The only protein bar my NUT approves of is the Quest bars. I keep one in my car and purse for emergencies like if I'm out longer than I intended and don't have access to proper food or if I'm traveling. I've tried a bunch of the flavors pre-op and the ones that are good are the Peanut butter ones, the chocolate ones are icky and the fruit ones are terrible.

They have lots of carbs compared with the protein you would get from them.  Also, protein bars, because they are so sweet and carby, can be a trigger food for lots of people which opens the floodgate to eating other carbs, especially sweets.

I sent you a PM about the bars, but I also wanted to pass along something my NUT said about bars...among the reasons listed above, she also discourages them because you have to follow 30/30 rules, and to eat bars along with food, it takes ALOT of time away from your SIP SIP SIP....
