I did it!! YES! You can too! Do ONE thing!
I work in downtown Toronto, Ontario in Canada. For those of you unfamiliar with the place it is a huge city with a population of nearly 4 million people. I travel into the heart of downtown and home again every day for work via the subway system as most people do because parking costs are ferocious and downtown driving is insanity!
Well....throughout my 12 years working for my employer I quickly learned where to load myself onto the subway so that I came off exactly where the escalators were thus avoiding the flights of stairs up to the various transfer points or exits of the subway stations. I always stood on the escalator and took my ride up without moving until I was at the very top. I was not only lazy but truthfully if I had climbed the stairs or even tried to climb the escalator I would get winded and sweaty so I just simply avoided it at all costs.
Back in August I made a decision that I was going to go straight until the New Year without taking a single escalator ever. My motto was that I had to take the stairs no matter what. It was hard at first because the subways are filled with flights and flights of stairs but eventually it got easier.....yesterday as I was on my way home from work it suddenly occurred to me that it was New Years Eve and I was practically running up the stairs now AND skipping every second step! At the top I wasn't winded at all, didn't need to stop to catch my breath, and wasn't sweating in the slightest! I have done this everywhere including malls, hospitals, etc.
I don't think I will ever take another escalator again! It is so easy to just squeeze in a little bit of physical fitness where I can.
I guess my reasoning for posting this is to say I am proud of myself but also to encourage you to just make one small change for yourself and watch how easily something can transform in your life. We are all such capable people if we only push ourselves to do something outside of our norm. Go for it!
