So, Im over two years out and Ive always been told.. by doctors my fatty peers and everyone else that leaks are only a risk very very early out... BUT today I saw this on the Sassy Sleever FB group...

My daughter Vsg Amber was sleeved 8 months ago and had no complications she is two pounds away from 100 Pds lost. Yesterday she started having left side pain this am she called me and could barely talk for the pain was so bad I attempted to drive her to the local hospital where we live and I had to pull over and call the rescue squad she turned gray began slaking once at the hospital they ran some test then life flighted her to Christ Hospital in Cincinnati dr curry in to see her who did her sleeve she is septic has pneumonia leak in her sleeve perforated bowel and possible chest wall my baby is sick and in ICU dr said he has never had a pt have a leak this far out have to do a test in am to see exactly where the leak is and will decide what to do in am Please everyone say a prayer I am very worried and scared. — at Clifton, Ohio.

Call me paranoid... Ill ******g agree.... I am... totally paranoid.. I asked this a million times and a million ways.

"If im a year out and in a bad car accident can my staple line rupture"

"If Im accosted by a mob of angry Italian  pizza makers and they shove seven pizzas in my belly will it explode" (although this is no longer a concern as I read today on HuffPo that there is a shortage of authentic pizza makers in Italy... If they dont have pizza makers there, us Americans must be really ****** Luckily I can get down with those fools at Pizza Hut)

"If I am playing flag football... which you all know I do so often and take an elbow to the gut will I quietly bust my staples and become a hot septic mess without ever seeing it coming?"

At every turn I was told no, no way, couldnt happen and even that my staple line would be stronger than ones natural stomach..  After reading this post... Im terrified, I want to wrap my self in bubble wrap and live in a house full of sugar free jello with no sharp edges in sight. This woman was 8 months out and from the sound of things doing amazingly. I can not imagine what she is going through and her family for that matter. I have thought of her non stop since reading the post. Hoping for good things, for peace for her mother... and go back to HOLY **** Do we know what we thought we knew about the sleeve? Are we safe? Ugh... Im scared for Amber.... and Im scared for us.

Any thoughts my friends?

Yes, that is scary.  And this is not the first time I've heard of a leak happening further out.  I've seen it on OH before more than 1 time.  :-(

Sorry, but I don't believe it. I doubt that the story is as it's told. It probably wasn't a leak or a ruptured staple line unless her doctor did something other than what is standard. The staple line once healed actually makes the stomach stronger.

Let us know if her mom updates the situation. The perforated bowel can happen from all sorts of other things than a leak in the sleeve. Could b a ruptured anurism in the intestines, I have a friend who had that...almost died....could b any number of reasons. I really hope its not a sleeve leak.

Could it be that she's had a small leak the whole time? I dont know.  I dont know if I believe that our stomachs are capable of developing a leak that far out. It's not something that's going to keep me awake at night wondering.

There is more to this story than a simple sleeve leak at eight months out, we do not know if she did have a fall or injury that may have precipitated this or untreated acid problems.

could be an ulcer that wore through the sleeve or a whole bunch of bad things happening like bad surgeon using crappy stapes incorrectly , the body rejecting the stapes , then the person eating a ton of food at onces  with a super big gulp filled with jolt

 very unlikely but possible

I wouldn't know where to point the finger or guess..... hopefully the person comes out fine and it turns into a good story....... and it is well documented so we can all learn something from this.....

For me it's just another reason to under eat and go easy on my body.......

I'm skeptical. You read so much nonsense on the web. Sometimes when you probe you find out that it's just that it wasn't reported very well. Sometimes people actually lie. (There are people who think it's fun to post lies and rile everybody up.) Sometimes people honestly believe what they post but they are mistaken all the same.

One thing I will say is that anyone can get a perforated bowel, whether they had WLS or not. Not everything that happens to us is because of WLS.

I also think this is *definitely* a case of "sloppy reporting". I mean what does "pneumonia leak in her sleeve perforated bowel and possible chest wall" even mean. Clearly that isn't accurate. That's a scared mom throwing out words making a word salad of what she was told and half heard/comprehended because she was so worried.

But, as I said, a perforated bowel is something that can happen to anyone. So it pneumonia. So are abcesses in the chest wall (my guess as to what pneumonia leak / possible chest wall might mean).

Another thing that happens is that people ignore all sorts of signs something is wrong as long as they are losing weight. So supposedly this gal was doing great with no complications but how do you know that? Maybe she had pain every time she ate something. Or threw up a lot. And ignored it.
