I haven't done a shake in a long time.  For me, the shakes stopped being effective at halting my hunger.  Real protein sources still do it for me, but liquid protein really doesn't.

My doc told me to stop the shakes after just four weeks and to get my protein from lean meats.
I found that initially, as I adjusted my daily foods, I would be short protein for the day so I continued to use shakes to make sure I got the right amount of protein.
I do the same now but mostly don't need them. Maybe once a week I get in a bind and don't have the right lunch option so that's when I use the shakes.

I'm almost 5 months out and still do protein shakes for breakfast. I would rather sleep than cook in the morning before heading to work.

At this point I still use protein shakes, but I only drink them when I don't have time to sit and eat my normal meal properly or when I am out on errands or at co-op.

I am 3 months pre op and i still enjoy a shake for breakfast...i add instant coffee and really look forward to it in the morning.  It really helps me get in all my protein.  From what i have read on here there are quiet a few people that drink protein shakes even years after surgery.

My Nutritionist suggested I continue using the protein shakes as needed to keep my daily protein consumption between 80 and 100 grams.  Most days, I need 1 scoop of protein powder to make these levels.  I hope I can phase it out, but I am guessing that won't happen until I'm in maintenance.

Best of luck with your weight loss journey.

UP TO YOU!!

ideally we're supposed to get ALL macronutrients through food.  Alas difficult to get the protein numbers up there needed for post surgical repair, and through the rapid fat loss phase so we aren't losing any more than usual lean muscle mass that comes with rapid weight loss.... without supplementin shakes...cuz of surgical/caloric restriction can't eat that much food..macronutrients protein, carbs, fats..to meet the MINIMUM dietary requirements.

I relied quite heavily on protein supps shakes /unflavored added to foods...my first 6 months at least.

To this day I supplement... a scoop of whey protein in 12 oz coffee or tea. Its my breakfast. 1 scoop supplies me with almost all the amino acids I need per day  (way short on tryptophan, minus some tyrosine, a little on methionine and cysteine) ...more than make up for them with food (carbs)...so long as I get em in by end of my day...Im good ,-)

Protein supp biz is a billions of dollar a year biz!  Convenient, quick n easy for us bari peeps to get it in...once yer past the rapid fat loss phase....totally unneccessary imo...especially for us gals...most of us don't need to supp it men or women....more psychological (as in my case ,-)...Ive seen only a couplea VSGrs here on OH who do wind up with protein maldigestion/malnutrition issues  ..so physically do rely on protein supps to keep their numbers /labs up.
