How long on a low carb diet before your body hits Ketosis....days...week.....longer???

For me it takes 2 or 3 days for the carbs to get out of my system.

It fluctuates for me.   I've been doing low carb (less than 40 grams of carb) for the last two months.  In the morning that ketostix will be purple but by late afternoon it will be completely neutral.   So am I in ketosis?   Depends upon the time of day :-)

I was always successful in avoiding it. As noted by MS, consult your doc if it's something appropriate for you.

Most of the time, within a few days.  I think the more important questions are: how low of a low carb diet do you need to be, and stay, in ketosis; and whether this is healthy for your body.  This is a ridiculously personal issue, varying vastly from person to person.  My body does not enter into ketosis until I have 17g or less of carbs a day.  And I find that this low amount of carbs is healthy for my body, but it might not be for everyone's.
