If Water is considered a "slider" fluid---why can I only drink:.....

Hi Sleevers:

I've had trouble from post-surgery (7/30/13) from drinking water.  Only 2 oz or less as I become so full (no food involved)...I've been in and out of the hosp. 3-4 times for dehydration then pneumonia.  Tonite I am feeling so sick from drinking.  Something must be wrong????

I use Propel Zero to flavor water, I also drink water room temp.  I've been drinking 64OZ+ since my kidney/pancreas txp 10 yrs ago so I am very used to drinking the water.....everyday this way.  I started out with plain water and that was fine now the Propel powder that I pour into the measured 64 oz bottle and can't finish the 8 oz glassful.

I do drink warmed beef broth to help.  What more can I do or say?  I NEED the water for my kidney!  I am going to see  my PCP on Monday, perhaps a stricture.  Or the esophagus closed up????

HELP PLEASE!  I can't take the heartburn (yes, from water too) and the nausea....Water is my issue right now but food also triggers the heartburn and nausea.  No barfing unless I do it! Which is too often at this point and I don't like doing that.

Thx for all your help and advice in the past.  This is getting me down.

Sounds like you may have some reflux issues - with the nausea and heartburn. That will make it a LOT more difficult to get in your water. I had the same issue from very early out. I found that taking sips of water that were too big triggered IMMEDIATELY waves of nausea. I had to train myself to take small swallows of water (and I still have to remind myself at almost 4 months out).

A "slider" is any food that is soft and "slides" easily through the sleeve, thus making it easy to eat more. These are things like mashed potatoes, pasta, anything starchy really, soups (clear or cream), etc. That's why we are encouraged to eat dense protein first. More dense protein stop at the pyloric valve and cause the sleeve to fill and for use to feel full.

As for getting in your water, it is a struggle for MANY of us, especially as early out as you are. It's just a matter of sipping ALL DAY LONG to get it all in. I was BAD about it early out. Like you, the nausea just wasn't worth it. Then my skin got really dry, my urine got really dark, and I got wicked headaches. With your kidney issues, please don't do like I did. I should have been carrying a water bottle around with me at all times. Flavoring water helped me a lot, so that 's a great idea. Try taking smaller sips. I hope that helps!

Best of luck, hon!

Hi Chrissy...

I really needed that advice...Your so right about the small sips!  I did get away from that so I better post a reminder near my water.  I even bought baby sippy cups from the grocery but maybe it is my taste buds but it tasted like plastic.  Not good and maybe not good for a baby...But that did work.  Small enuf to carry too.

I had scrambled egg (1) this morning with 8 oz 1% milk.  That meal stayed with me all day even until dinner.  I hadn't had any water so ate dinner....delicious but of course only ate a very small amt.  Then nauseua.   I've tried water after the meal by an hour and sick.  It all came up.

Thank you again....I'll get my sippy cups out....

Glad I could help! I was also an air swallower. Bit time. My surgeon told me to get a Camelbak style water bottle so that I'd be aware of the air that I was sucking in. It helped the nausea a LOT.

**I know a lot of surgeons say that straws are a No-No, but my surgeon claims that is a "bunch of malarkey" (his words!). I swallow WAY less air when using a straw.

FYI, milk counts like water for the purposes of hydration.  So, if water is making you sick, but you can get the milk down, drink more milk.  It's got protein, too.

Hey that works.  Milk is fine but the day I had it with my eggs, it must have been tooo cold and it seemed to freeze my throat .....

I'll try milk again but warm it up with some chocolate.  Yummy...Thx for the idea....

Hi Chrissy...

Again your right, my educational material said "no straws"....I had an idea I was swallowing air hence the "burping"....

OK, Please describe that bottle you bought and where to buy it.  I am feeling much better now.  Have been sipping.  I miss the gulping action I used b/c I got my water intake level in....

I've managed to lose 46 lbs so I don't think I am that stupid though I am a senior  working on my signature that doesn't seem to appear.  I follow the instructions...though I must be a "Senior Novice"....Ha!

Hope it works this time.

Thx Chrissy....

You're definitely NOT stupid! 46 pounds is GREAT! And I'm with you. I SOOO miss gulping water. If I do that now... Ouch!

This is the kind of water bottle that my surgeon recommended:

http://www.amazon.com/CamelBak-BPA-Free-Better-Bottle-Valve/dp/B0019DCD7U

It didn't have to be this brand, just anything with a "bite valve" (a straw that you have to bite down on to open before sucking on it). It's an adult sippy cup! :) I've seen knock-offs at Walmart, Target, etc.

And, by the way, I can see your signature ;)

Hi Chrissy...

Thx for that website and add'tl places to buy the bottle.  WOW, I bet what I was tasting are the BHA's or plastics.  I think ordering this one I will get it without the bad materials vs the others that may be inferior..., etc. but I will look them up on the puter.

LOL  that signature was an easy one, I was trying to get the widget tracker which is btw, exactly like yours.   The code I was to copy and paste or click on does have my name in it so it is there but only once did I see it on this site.  I think I adjusted the wt and it stopped but there isn't a "save" button on there.  I will work on it again.  I had my sleeve on 7/30/13 which is 2.5 mos out.  I am proud as I would or haven't ever lost that amt of wt in two months....

I hope we can stay in touch as you really understand my problem.

Thx

Alese,

i am three weeks out and this last week I had been having all the issues you described.  I went to urgent care and they gave me phone green for the nausea, thinking that if my stomach wasn't upset I could get more water down, they also told me clear liquid for a few days too.  I'm not a Dr. but it might help to get something for your nausea.  I know I was starting to get dehydrated and once I got more water and broth I felt much much better.........also I just bought a camelbak at zappos.com and they have free shipping and were cheaper then the camelbak website by 2$ plus free shipping! Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon!

Smiles:),

Lisa
