Kinda OT: depression

Anyone know of any good ideas for supplements, or even certain foods to eat, that can help some with depression?  I know the best option is usually some kind of combination of meds and/or therapy, or one or the other, but I'm between jobs right now and have no insurance, and I'm pretty sure that the issues that are causing me to need therapy are the same issues that are causing me to not sparkle in interviews, but I can't go to therapy until I have insurance, or at least a decent job again, and I won't have a job until I can do well in an interview, so it's kind of a vicious cycle.  So basically, I need ideas for ways to naturally boost my mood as much as possible to help in the meantime.  It may not amount to much, but anything is better than the way I've felt lately.

I'll try that... I'm open for anything affordable at this point.  Thanks!

St Johns wort has been shown to be as effective as prescription anti-depressants at treating mild to moderate depression.  It does interact with many other drugs, though, so if you're on other medications you'll need to do research to make sure you avoid any dangerous interactions.   Unfortunately, since it's a supplement and not a drug, formulations aren't standard.  If you can afford to get in to see a doctor there are several anti-depressants available as generics for $4/month.

Depending on where you live, there are services available on a sliding scale.  My brother gets his therapy at a local university from a grad student.  It's $10/session and the counselor does have a BA in psych.

I'll look into the St. Johns wort... thanks!

I probably won't qualify for any sliding scale program because my husband's income would offset my lack of work.  No one ever takes into account that I have student loan payments, we have a mortgage, and we have medical bills that we are trying to catch up on... they only look at pay stubs or w-2's and assume we don't need the help.  He doesn't even make that much, really... less than $35,000... but that seems to be enough that we are often deemed to not "need" those types of assistance.  Very frustrating.   I will check to see if my local university does something like this, though...doesn't hurt to check.

Since you're asking about remedies that don't require a doctor visit, I would suggest walking. Try and get in at least 45 minutes and try for 2x a day. That really was a mood booster for me.   If you can afford it, there are psychiatric nurse practitioners who charge less than psychiatrists and who, in general tend to  have lots of drug samples on hand.

Good point... I do need to get back to my exercise routine asap.  I injured my leg last weekend (my husband said it sounded like an ACL injury from what I was describing) but it seems to be doing a little better now.  I was trying to give it a few days of rest before I got back into my usual routine.

I'll definitely look into the nurse practitioner route.  Thanks!

I've used 5-HTP in the past to good effect.

I agree, 5-HTP helps.  Also try Ginseng as well.
