Protein Shakes

Happy Saturday Everyone,

I was wondering, I can't have my surgery for about 6 months and have been eating lots of meats, dairy and green veggies on the plan the nutritionist gave me. Should I be drinking protein shakes now, or should the protein shakes come after the surgery? Right now I get about 80-100 grams of protein per day.

Stick to your nutritionist's plan. TRUST ME, you will get tired of shakes quickly on you pre op diet (if you have one) and immediately post op. Most post ops aim for 80-100 g of protein so you're doing fine!

All protein shakes are going to do is put weight on.  Body builders use them to bulk up and people use them after surgery to get some nourishment when they can't eat solid food.

Stick to the plan that you have been given.  Track your food to be sure you are getting the correct amount of protein.  If you need more than get it from food.

Good luck on your surgery.

it is important to do your research before making assumptions and making false claims. There are several types of protein. Whey, soy, and egg proteins. Yes "bodybuilders" use a mass bulk protein to gain "mass" as they are "bodybuilders" however there are also fitness models who do not bulk with protein. They are two completely different worlds apart. It Is also important to keep in mind as to getting an isolate protein "single" vs complex as the body can not digest more then one protein at a time. Athletic proteins such as ISOpure and wheyabolic are designed for weight loss low sugar and calorie counts, they as well come with essential amino acids required to loose weight. Protein supplement is essential to a successful result of surgery or in general.

She has six months before surgery.  She asked if she should be drinking protein shakes and at this point she should be eating her protein not drinking it.

So all I had to do was chug down a shake and the weight would have fallen out - what with all those essential amino acids and all???

I've never had a protein shake or bar and I'm up to 9 + years of successful weight loss and maintenance so I'd say your proclamation that "protein supplement is essential to a successful result of surgery or in general"  is bunkum!

It's okay to be nice on this board....

Just looking at dates, White Dove having been a member here since 2003...10 years, and I-did-it having been a member two days... 48 hours.  I think it's safe to assume that White Dove has done her research and is not making assumptions and false claims....

Please take some time to settle in and play nice here I-did-it!

Just to clarify for everyone. The fact that white dove had her surgery 10 years ago proves my point. The types of protein we have available to us today was not around 10 years ago. I was simply clarifying the types and options of protein we have available to us now as false information was being provided. To address also that I had never once said that only taking a protein shake would solve our issues with obesity. If I had please specify exactly what I said so that I may adjust my comment :). I am simply providing information positive or negative. As well we have all had different surgeries and at different points and time meaning that guidelines and nutritional guidelines and processes all evolve. What is required now was not necessarily required 10 years ago.

I don't think there is anything wrong with you finding samples of some shakes so you can find what you like.....dessertish flavors vs. fruity flavors.  Just cut back a little on your food intake that day.  Of course your taste may change.  Before surgery I loved hot stuff.  After surgery I can't handle mild hot sauce. It's really up to you.  I personally like to do a shake for breakfast.
