I Just Got ***** Slapped By My Sleeve

Yes, you read that correctly. I have learned a rather stern lesson tonight... Do Not Try To Take Advantage Of Your Sleeve.

I went out to the movies with my folks this evening. Side note - "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" is an EXCELLENT movie... But I digress. Before we got to the theater, I had planned to eat a little bit my mother's popcorn and sneak in my own non-soda drink (shh!) like I usually would. When we got there late, I accidentally left my drink in the car. Mistake #1. When we got inside, because I was in such a hurry and wasn't thinking, I ordered my own popcorn. Mistake #2. Then I ordered some milk duds, thinking that I'd just suck on a few later in the movie. Mistake #3. Then, I ordered a drink (planning to ge****er from the self-serve station rather than pay more for bottled water). Mistake #4. Of course, the self serve ended up not having a water function, so I just got some sprite in my hurry to get into the theater. Mistake #5.

I'm sure you can imagine what happened next. I ate popcorn to my heart's content, ate half the box of milk duds by the end of the movie, and drank enough of the sprite to make my insides gurgle (in reality that was only probably 5 sips, but still). By the end of the movie, I felt queasy and pretty gross, and my folks were asking me if I felt ok because I looked flushed.

Let's just say that my sleeve did not approve of my "I'm-an-adult-and-I-can-do-as-I-please-thank-you-very-much" attitude. I believe in living in moderation, but I have NEVER acted like THIS since surgery. "Sick" is not a precise enough term for what happened next. Yes, ladies and gentlemen... this VSGer has proven that we, in fact, can dump.

_________

Now... all of that being said, this has been an excellent reminder to not become complacent. My reflux is finally pretty much under control, allowing me to eat almost anything that I please. I stick to my 80 or more protein/40 or fewer carbs regimen 95% of the time and allow myself the occasional treat (usually no more than a bite or two). This works for me and the scale is still moving down, and I know that when it no longer works, I will change my battle plan. However... and that is a BIG HOWEVER... I have definitely learned my lesson tonight. I do not get a "day off" from this surgery. I do not get to run rampant with my carb flag waving. I do not get to forget that my life and my eating habits are NEVER going to be what they were pre op.

Let the "Shame, shame!"s begin if you must... Just please know that my sleeve has already slapped me on the wrist and I have DEFINITELY learned my lesson! I just hope that someone else can learn from my mistakes instead of finding out the hard way!

Thanks! It was pretty ridiculous once the initial feelings of "what-have-i-done-someone-kill-me-now" passed. My sleeve is definitely my warden.

Sorry you had such a tough lesson. Frankensleeve has only made me feel uncomfortable when I've pushed him too far. I get this really uncomfortable stretched feeling when I take a bite too much and/or a poking sensation deep in my throat. I learned not to push my luck, no matter how much I want one more bite.

Chrissy,  I'm having difficulty sorting out what you learned from your experience and what others should take away from this. Is it just that your sleeve will ***** slap you if you binge eat?  The further out you get, the less of a ***** slap you will get, so it might be worth looking a little deeper.

Now for the really tough love. How do you see ordering popcorn as happening because you weren't thinking?  , or getting soda because you were in such a hurry? Why the candy too?? Even if that's the truth, why did you eat all that stuff?   I think there is lots you can learn from this (and no I'm really not trying to shame you) but having your sleeve punish you is not the most valuable lesson.

I'll be honest. I was having a "I can do what I want" moment. I wasn't eating emotionally. I just wanted some d@mn popcorn! I wasn't consciously trying to stuff my face. I say I wasn't thinking when I ordered the popcorn because I didn't realize that my mom had already ordered hers. And I ended up with a soda because, in order to go back through the line and pay for a bottled water, I would have had to get in line behind probably 30 people and we were already 15 minutes late. I truly was just in a hurry to get into the theater when it came to the soda. I figured I'd just pass it off to someone else since I'm not one to pay for something and not use it.

Is this what a "binge" looks like with a sleeve? I probably ended up eating just over a cup of popcorn (instead of the 5-6 kernels that I would have if it had been in someone else's lap instead of my own). Maybe 8-9 milk duds. 5-6 sips of the soda... Seriously, is that what a binge looks like now? You're right. There is something to be learned here.

Thanks for the reply. I always love your commentary on "The Forum Which Must Not Be Named" ;) I'm a bit of a lurker over there.

And I think that the "point" I was trying to make is simply that it just isn't worth it to experiment so wildly. That's what I'VE taken away from it anyway.

And just so there is no confusion, I was not trying to be snarky/rude/"butt-hurt" with my response to you. I am legitimately curious as to whether or not this is what a binge looks like post op. As I said, I'm a fan of your advice on "that forum".

In case no one has told you today - you are awesome. I adore you. Be ready for the backlash for trying to expose some of the problems with the story.

Chrissy - don't you worry one little bit. When you get to 2 years out you will be able to eat an entire bag of popcorn, a Love It ice cream and an entire box of Milk Duds AND you won't necessarily dump. It might take you awhile, but there comes a time in your Sleeve life that you find out that you can eat almost anything if you really want it.

Did you notice that I didn't disagree with Spencerella? Probably not, but that's ok. I won't worry about it. Not one little bit.

This journey is about consistency, not perfection. I am not perfect, nor do I strive to be, but I AM consistent the vast majority of the time. I believe in living in moderation. An unpopular camp, I know. But as the scale is still moving down, I plan to stay the course until it no longer works for me. At that point, I will reevaluate and make changes as necessary to make goal.

And, no. I won't be able to eat a "Love It" ice cream. I'm lactose intolerant :)
