Shoulder pain and a leak

My Doctor didn't say anything about shoulder pain being a warning sign of a leak but..

I was admitted to the hospital on Monday with a leak and infection. I had my VSG surgery on 4/2/14. Everything was going fine, I was feeling great. Then BAM! I woke up Saturday 4/17 with shoulder pain. I did have a bit of pain on my left side too. It didn't get better so on Monday I went to the ER and was released yesterday. The scary part was I had no fever. The leak healed itself, so, no surgery thank goodness. I am getting better a bit each day, but, back to liquids for me.

Has anyone else had a leak 17 days plus post op?

So sorry you went though this. Yes, there are a few posters who have dealt with leaks. Novascotiadawn is one I believe. It is not unusual to have shoulder pain with the leak, but I think it is very unsuaul to have it diagnosed and then send the patient home saying it healed itself. Keep a close eye on yourself! I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Thank you happyteacher. I will keep an eye on it. I was only allowed IV fluids (no food or drink) for over 72 hours to give it time to heal. The dr said the stomach has a great capacity to heal itself and the barium swallow showed no leak.

my surgeon said almost all leaks happen in the first 3 weeks

I'm so sorry that this has been your experience! I agree with the previous response from happyteacher. Listen CLOSELY to your body over the next few weeks. Take it easy! I hope this is the end of complications for you!

They found mine 4 months out and well it wasn't purdy in there... My biggest complaint was left should pain!!! The other stuff was controlled with pain meds!!! Until I was ready to die on Oct/08..

I'd agree, listen to your body... Even with leak tests.. They are missed because of all the swelling in there..

just a silly question ... as I was reading the responses I see everyone saying that left shoulder pain ais a sign of a leak!!!! I was put back in the hospital after 3 days of being home they took a leak test it came back negitave but the PAIN was horrific in my left shoulder!!! I was under the impression that Left shoulder pain was due to gas build up and it had to be walked out!!!! just wondering Im confused!!!
