1 Month (and a bit) Post-Op Update

Sunday was my one month surgiversary ;-). I’m down 32lbs and currently eating soft foods/slowly reintroducing foods.  I get a bit of heartburn and gas in the form of burping. In terms of my vitamins and supplements, I currently take chewable multi-vitamins, calcium wafers, liquid iron and sublingual B-12. I find the calcium wafers extremely sour and chalky so I will be trying gummies next time. The liquid iron is even worse and will try chewables next. Are there any other vitamins/supplements you recommend taking?

At this point I have no interest in anything sweet (chocolate) or baked goods which used to love. I don’t find I have any cravings and all I really want is protein.  People can eat delicious food around me and it doesn’t faze me. In the past I would have really struggled with this if I was trying to diet. Someone suggested the change in my taste buds could just be a result of the anesthesia still left in my system? I wonder if this is true or if this will be permanent. I hope so!

For some reason I am struggling getting enough water in. Not sure what this is about but I am keeping a water bottle with me at all times. My main focus in terms of eating has been getting in enough protein. I don’t seem to be getting any fruits/veggies in. I have started juicing to help this and am going to order some Amazing Grass products to mix into my fruit juices. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have only been walking for exercise but am going to start doing some cardio until my 8 week mark. I am going to start Zumba tomorrow. I’m also excited for the 5K MS Walk I’m taking part in on Sunday.

Way to go! You are doing GREAT! I can't wait for my post with awesome news like this. My surgery date is the 16th of June!

I take the following:

#1 Multi, Calcium 500mg, Vitamin D 5000IU, B-12 1000mcg (every other day)
#2 Calcium, Vitamin K 500mcg
#3 Multi, Calcium, Vitamin D
#4 Iron 18mg, Vitamin C 500mg

I love the bariatric advantage peanut butter chocolate chews.  They're delicious.  And the bariatric advantage iron is fruity and tasty, especially if I chew it up with my vitamin C.

I didn't experience any change in taste buds, but I think most people have said it passes.

I'm able to have a bite of veg or two with dinner each night and I don't worry about it.  I know I'm getting vitamins and minerals through supplements, and my lab work was awesome except for my copper which is high, so I'm not worried.  My surgeon wants me to avoid liquid calories, so juicing wouldn't be an option for me.

I only walked for the first 6 weeks, since that was all I was allowed to do, and then I went crazy and now take  6 fitness classes a week in addition to my 3 hours of hard walking each week.  It's pretty awesome :D

Thanks for your reply! I'm going to look into those bariatric advantage products, see if I can get them here. They sound way better than what I'm taking lol. And congrats on your progress!! That is so awesome about how much you're hitting the gym, that is going to make for one amazing transformation!

We're had surgery about the same time :)

i take chewable iron from bariatric advantage and they taste pretty good.

I would ask you surgeon about exercising yet. I have a wee****il my next appt with mine, and I'll be asking about being cleared for exercise.

And itching skin, omg the skin it itches lol hubby says it's cuz it's shrinking but whatever, it drives me nuts!

I'm planning on restarting my Pilates DVDs and Couch to 5K, when I am ok'ed. I started to exercise early and got pain from my nerves still healing, so now I'm more cautious.

That's funny you mention the itching. I have been complaining about that lately but didn't even connect it to the surgery lol. Glad I'm not the only one. What is Couch to 5K? I will just be walking the 5K tomorrow (today - I'm working a night shift), however I want to find some kind of exercise program that works towards jogging/running.

You are going great! I like to mix fruit with my shakes too. I have done bananas, blueberries, and strawberries mixed in with whatever flavor shake I am having and it is fantastic!

check out my blog!

Great to hear it going well for you. Glad to see someone else has the burping issue. I have heard that Vitamin E 400IU soft gels work really well for constipation issues that may come up as you transition to soft foods, especially with it mostly being protein. They say if you drink enough water it will help this, but I think I may get some vitamin E just in case. I have chewable calcium, but its like the sweet tarts looking tablets and they tast chalky to me..so im looking for some too. glad you mentioned the liquid iron because I was going to buy it.

Have fun at the 5k MS walk

I take Opurity (by Unjury) chewable "bypass and sleeve optimized multivitamins."  They are huge, but they taste better than the other chewable multivitamins I tried, and I need only one daily.  They contain 30 mg of iron.  I ordered them from www.opurity.com.  I tried Bariatric Choice (Advantage?) chewable ones before that but thought they were awful.  I also like Walgreen's brand of chewable calcium  (500 mg) plus vitamins D (1000 IU) and K (40 mcg).  It comes flavored as chocolate or caramel.  I prefer the caramel.  Often Walgreen's will have them on sale--buy one get one free.  For B 12, I use Swanson's sublingual B 12 drops.  They are cherry flavored, taste good, and are cheap compared to other brands I looked at.  I ordered them on line too.
