Gum?
Yes, I heard the same thing at our NUT class and we asked why and they said cause the stomach muscles are recovering/not what they used to be and it can not digest the gum. If you accidentally swallow it and can cause an obstruction. Plus some people when they chew (like cows I guess) can get extra air in the stomachs and get uncomfortable and gassy.
I for one DO NOT plan on stop chewing gum... I am a minty/spearmint/polar ice fresh type of gal..... I have NEVER swallowed gum... plus I don't chew like a cow...LOL so I don't thing excess air would be an issue.
Many people swallow air when they chew gum, which can cause pretty gnarly discomfort. This is one of those things that goes into the same category with the "straws are the devil" sort of thing. You'll get different surgeons saying different things all day long.
My take? You're an adult. If you can't chew gum without swallowing it, you've got bigger problems than your weight ;) Also, if you find that you swallow air? Umm... then don't do it again? It's not rocket science ;)
(Just realized that this could have all sounded very snarky... No snark intended! This topic just always amuses me. NUTs treat us like children sometimes!)

Just a counter point, here, for thought...We (most all of us) consider ourselves to be safe drivers..would NEVER cause an accident, etc. So why buy insurance? Never say never. Just saying.

I didn't chew gum again until about 6 weeks ago. No reason why I stopped for so long, but I picked up again for a couple of reasons:
- Satisfies any craving I might have for sweets (which is not often, but I'd rather down the 5 calories for a stick of lemon bar-flavored gum than the lemon bar itself)
- Keeps me from grazing.
I never swallowed my gum pre-op, and definitely haven't post-op. Like Chrissy said, if you're swallowing gum, then there are larger problems present...
