Leak Test
The hardest part for me was trying not to throw up. Thankfully I didn't have to drink much and it was over fairly quickly. Then I could drink!!

I was not allowed to have anything by mouth until I had the leak test. I got super dried out, but the surgeon relented and gave me chloraseptic at least!

I had mine the morning after surgery. The stuff I had to drink was more like liquid chemical cleaner rather than chalky. It was nasty but you can do anything for a few minutes. I also stood with the big X-ray machine in fronting me Nd I could watch the liquid go down. Fascinating. I had to drink TWO servings off the nasty stuff because my new tummy was so swollen the liquid went down at a trickle pace and the doctor wanted to see the sleeve filled top and bottom. Blech. No leaks here. I understand if there is a leak it depends on how big and where the leak is on what they do. They could have to go back in and fix it, or some they watch and let it heal closed on its own. That is just my understanding from my paperwork. I was able to drink before the leak test. Best wishes!
I had VSG surgery this past Friday, the 15th. Most surgeons, mine included, perform a leak test during the procedure. They submerge the new stomach in water and the anesthesiologist expands the stomach with air (just like at the tire shop). If bubbles appear then there's a leak and can easily be fixed since they're already in there. I was told I'd have another leak test in radiology the next day and was surprised to learn my surgeon had very recently stopped ordering the add'l leak test. With 8,000 surgeries and never a leak he felt confident in discontinuing that last test. Gotta tell you, I was overjoyed because I couldn't imagine my very 1st drink was going to be that contrast stuff.
I had 3 in total. The first one I do not remember because I was under. The next 2 were done the days after surgery , I had to drink apple juice with a blue dye and I mean blue blue blue, I spilled some on myself and had a hard time removing it LOL . I did not feel anything other than it taste awful, not bad enough to make me gag but pretty bad. The dr was checking to make sure I peed it and it did not come out of my drain. The next day I had the last one, this was an x ray, I drank another nasty liquid and the dr checked to see if it went down the normal path or if it leaked into my stomach. Passed all there. YAY ! I think everyone has it done, it is how they make sure you are ready to go or if they need to go back in and fix something.
