beef?

My nut said to avoid beef and pork for 3-6 months following surgery.  I'm going to email her and ask why, but I'm wondering if anyone else had the same instructions.  I live in Wyoming...chicken gets old and fish is hard to come by. I'd much prefer to eat beef.

Beef and pork can get tough and dry (but oh man, chicken can too!).  My NUT didn't give any restrictions on type of meat, but did advise choosing the most moist cuts with added juices to help get and keep it down.

start with ground or tender pulled meat served with some sort of moisture added, chew well, eat slow, and see how you feel.

I prefer dark meat chicken b/c it is more tender than a dry boneless breast.  I have not had issues with steak or pork - as long as it is tender and I chew well, it is no different than eating chicken or fish.

I probably should also mention that I'm 3.5 weeks out. I'm released to start eating "normal" food at 4 weeks.

Thanks for the replies so far!

I was instructed to avoid beef until 5 weeks post op because it's harder to digest. I'm 3 weeks out now and I'm also craving beef. It's definitely a good question for your surgeon.

That is very strange.  I was told to eat all lean protein starting with about two weeks out.  I find that beef and pork worked better for me than chicken (at least chicken breast) early out.  I also found that a little sauce made things easier for me.  I became great at making low cal sauces to go over my slow cooked beef.

The only problems I had with beef and pork were if they were greasy.  As long as I mopped that up and stuck to the less-greasy stuff it was fine.  I'd ask your NUT what his/her basis is for this "rule".   Our stomachs can digest it, it may just not sit well for some people early out.

Beef was allowed for me from purees on (2 weeks). In fact, it was my first meal! I've had ground beef, pureed tri-tip steak and roast beef deli slices with no problem.
