Insurance issue AFTER surgery due to pre-op blood test
So, I had surgery that is covered by my insurance. But I got a bill for $277 from a lab because the blood test done a week before surgery is NOT medically necessary according to my insurance company. So be sure to check with your insurance company to see if the pre-op blood test that all the doctors order a week before surgery is covered. I was told I should have read the 25 page explanation of benefits that was sent to me in January.
I just had my insurance company try to pay me instead of my surgeon. The EOB says he is out of network. Thank goodness I kept all my paperwork in a folder. I faxed that in-network approval letter over to them in the blink of an eye. Let's see how long it takes them to straighten this out.
If you are up to it - try to fight it. My insurance company processed 4 of the 5 claims from my day of surgery incorrectly. That means they had an 80% error rate. That is completely unacceptable. And they wouldn't have fixed any of it if I hadn't kept hounding them to do it. They are looking for anything to keep from having to pay out money. Maybe ask your surgeon for a letter explaining that the test was, in fact, medically necessary.
