Many people have better luck drinking with straws than without.

The "reason" some people are told not to use them is that "you might inhale air!!"  I don't know about you, but I've known how to drink out of a straw correctly since I was a kid and that definitely didn't change when I had 85% of my stomach removed.

They can cause gas which might be painful if your not fully healed.

My program was very clear in their message to me that straws were a big no-no. It was one of the things these emphasized.

Mine too, a definite No-No. But, there was a person in our WLS support group drinking from a straw just after 2 months and had no problems.

I tried and iced tea with a straw, but I got "burpy" and had to wait an hour to resume drinking an iced tea without it..  I am only 3 and 1/2 weeks post op.

It's a RNY rule to avoid sucking air into the small pouch (which we don't have). Sadly enough, many nutritionists and surgeons' staff don't bother to differentiate much between the procedures.

My plan says not to use a straw, but it was the only way I could get my liquids down. I didn't have a problem with it.

I am a "gulper" when it comes to drinking anything, I am so used to not having time to sip my drinks.  I depend on straws to slow me down.  I don't know how that is going to work once I have the surgery.
