Hot delicious protein in a parking lot. Who knew?

Earlier this morning I had to drive over some furniture for my daughter who just moved into her apartment. Noticed on the way back that the local Mexican grocer was grilling chicken in the parking lot. Hubby was intrigued- and hungry. So we stop and pick up a half chicken grilled and it came with beans, rice, salsa, and hot tortillas. $8- great deal. Anyway, the chicken was freaking amazing!!! Not sure if it was brined, or just an awesome spice profile but if anyone happens to know the secret to this awesome grilled chicken please share!! It was not just adobo seasoning, as we normally do that (and love it). I suspect it is just a typical Mexican type seasoning combination.

Sounds delightful! Growing up in Canada, we never had Mexican food, unless you counted the taco packs your mom would pick up at the grocery store.  Now we have a few fast food chains, but nothing great in the way of Mexican food, but being married to a Southerner, I certainly appreciate the taste!

We have those places everywhere in Texas, El Pollo Rico is what its called here. It is delicious! Cost way more than $8 though.

It really was a great deal. Turns out they are out there grilling every weekend the weather is nice. Hoping we might get a few more weekends of them doing this before the weather gives out here in Michigan. We don't get many roadside grilling/street food type options here. Food trucks if you go down into Detroit or catch one at a suburban food truck rally- but not the roadside grill thing too much. Yum!

Down here in Texas (Houston area) that type of chicken and other meats is everywhere! There is no one kind of seasoning they use. Its a mixture to the cooks preference.

Many of the places here in Tucson use a seasoning mix called Goya Sazon; you buy it pre-mixed similar to Mrs. Dash. If memory serves, the mix is:

  • salt
  • black pepper
  • garlic powder
  • dried culantro/coriander
  • cumin
  • oregano
  • ground annatto/achiote (sub paprika if you can't find it)

Some mixes include saffron, I don't think they have it in the basic mix. Equal parts of everything, more or less.

If you PM me your address, I'd be happy to mail you a pouch or two! You can get a packet that's enough to season one chicken for about fifty cents at the Mexican grocer :)
