You need to look at what surgery addresses your food issues and has the post-op lifestyle you can best live with. My food issues were all related to appetite and hunger which I believed to be caused by excess ghrelin. The sleeve removes the part of your stomach that produces ghrelin and so it seemed perfect for me. Plus it has a much lower complication rate than bypass, which was very important to me.
On top of that, my surgeon has found that, in his practice, the VSGers lose as much weight as the bypassers and have similar co-morbidity resolution. So I couldn't see paying more money for a riskier surgery that wasn't going to give me any additional benefits.
But they all work. And they all don't work.
That's why you have to pick the one that is right for you.

Hi & welcome! I am still pre-op, but I have chosen VSG. You've received some good advice here! For me, it was between the lapband & VSG because I did not want malabsorption. After research, I decided to go with the sleeve. I have a lower BMI as well & insurance won't pay for my WLS because I don't qualify, so that played a role in my decision as well.
Continue your research, talk to anyone who will talk to you & trust your instincts! You need to find the surgery that is right for you. Good luck!

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I realize that the decision of which surgery is a personal one, and I'm inclined to chose the VSG. My surgeon currently only does the band and RNY, but is doing some research on VSG and is hopefully going to start that surgery in the summer.
Anyways...thanks for the input everyone, it's great to get the experiences of other "lightweights" as to which surgery they've had. I've had some people say they didn't think I was "big" enough for RNY. And realizing that this is a one time only - I want to make the best decision!
