Can protein shakes make reflux/heartburn worse???

I started on my 10 day pre-op diet Friday and even though I am taking prevacid my heartburn is worse and my stomach is burning something awful.  I am allowed  three 8oz. protein drinks and a small meal (protein/good carb/veg) per day plus unlimited sugar free liquids. I don't know if I've got something going on with my stomach-like an ulcer or maybe it's just my body adjusting to the new diet.  I am afraid when the Dr. goes in to do my surgery that it will get cancelled because of an ulcer or something.  Not sure what to do at this point.

Sounds like you're not doing well on an empty stomach for sure. Nothing showed up on your endoscope?

Gina-
My endoscope was almost a year ago. He saw some irritated spots in my stomach and fixed an esophageal stricture.   Dr. told me to quit taking feldene and I've been on the prevaicd since then. He was not my surgeon, just did the scope.  I really haven't had any problems unless I forget to take the prevacid.

I am very surprised you didn't need an endoscopy pre=op to check for ulcers and h-pylori.  Most pre-ops need this as a standard test.  Try getting some Pepcid AC and take it before you drink the shakes.  I use the chewables and they work immediately - I take 2 at a time.

I think the Pepcid is a good idea. Sometimes we need a "****tail" of antacids for the best affect.

I didn't need one pre op. I did it on my own though. It's not a bad idea.

I couldn't drink a lot of liquids before surgery.  I got horrible heartburn.  Things like crystal lite were a killer for me.  Pretty much anything with flavoring.  For my liquid diet, I had to drink things like broth and hot chocolate.  I ate things like SF jello.

Almost instantly after surgery, my heart burn was gone and it has never returned!!!!   I hope the same thing happens for you!!!

I hope you get it all figured out and it doesn't effect your surgery date.

Thank you everyone for your input. I am going to go get some pepcid AC chewables and see if that helps.

Is there milk in your protein shake?  It could be an issue with milk, try the protein mixed with water and see if that helps.  I know my first 3 days on my liquid diet were very hard for me but I think mine was just carb withdrawal.

I hope you find out what is going on and it gets better soon, you might want to call your surgeon and let him know he might want to have some tests done before surgery to see if there is anything going on he needs to be aware of.

No milk, I use soy milk because I have a milk intolerance.  If It doesn't improve I will call the dr. tomorrow.
