Fats in our diet.

I just have a little query about fat in our diet.  I was given a dietary guideline book by my doctor and it says I need to stay under 5% fat in my diet.  My question is what do we do with natural fats like nuts?

I've been carefully watching sugar as I worked that out pretty quick it's awful pain that goes with sugary foods.  I was so darn proud of myself I baked a batch of chocolate muffins for my husband with chocolate frosting and I didn't even look at licking the bowl.

I think the fear of fat is running a muck in the medical community. Stay away from the sugar though.

So how much fat is in an average day for light weight WLS person?  Is there any guidelines at all?

I want to say about 30 grams. Low carb with a little fat isn't a problem, it's when you eat both carbs and fat.

my plan says less than 40 grams..right now I average less than 20 but I can't really eat nuts at all so most of that fat comes from meat and cheese...I would imagine the further out you are the more potential you have of eating higher fat higher carbs so I think that is when you really need to be on the look out...

I couldn't answer that question because I never look at the fats in what I eat.  I have been determined since the beginning that I didn't want to sacrifice taste and feel like I was eating diet food.

I base my Menus on Protein, Low "bad" carbs, fruits, and vegetables.    I think if you make good choices in those categories the fats we take in will be in the right amounts.

Now Ava, who swears by low fats will probably chime in and give you a better idea of what totals she takes in during a day.

Every Surgeons ideas are different.  You need to see what works for you and adjust as necessary.

During the honeymoon period you can pretty much lose no matter what you eat but thats also where bad habits are formed.

I didn't track fats.  We still need SOME fat in our diets, and since you are a RNY'er too, you'll malabsorb some of the fat.  You'll know if you ate too much fat (or that you're malabsorbing the fat) as your poop will float... ok, maybe TMI, but its true...

Now nuts - be careful early out with them.  I couldn't tolerate them for quite a long time, and if you eat them, chew into oblivion.  Fats in nuts is a healthier fat... but it can also be a slippery slope later on if you start eating a lot of them as you can eat more (grazing, snacking, etc).  Lots of calories in them too - cashews were my demise.

Karin, the info given to me by a nut who doesn't understand DS'ers but is really good at understanding RNY'ers told me about 30 grams of fat daily.

The reason I say she doesn't understand DS'ers is we only absorb about 20% of the fat we eat.

But like was already mentioned, I believe (and there is NO scientific evidence for this at all) is that RNY'ers don't absorb all the fat they eat either, it's just a higher percentage than a DS'er.

Count protein and carbs, fats will sort themselves out.

I don't really watch my fat.  Like Jody said, I don't want to sacrifice taste if I don't have to.  I eat things like avocado and salad dressings and higher fat dairy (don't like fat free but I can live with 2%).  I don't eat nuts because I don't really care too much about them.  I just make sure the fat I get is "healthy".

Thanks so much guys for all your input on this subject.  I like taste and always go for a decent quality food as I can only have so little so I don't want to fill up on rubbish quality foods.  I like nuts but I imagine they will be hard to digest and especially right at the moment as I'm still so new out fro surgery.
