Swallowing

Here I am again with another question.  When the surgeon did my RNY he also found a hernia that he described as being big enough to drive a truck through.  He said he fixed it.  However I feel like every time I swallow something it barely  has room to get down into my pouch.  I always *ALWAYS* feel like I have a lump of something in my throat.  I'm supposed to be at the soft food stage but to be honest I can't handle soft foods right now - they not only have a hard time getting down, I feel slight nausea.

SIGH.

I am going to call the surgeon's office tomorrow morning but I thought I would ask here first to see if anyone has an idea or has experienced this.  I so want to get to where I can eat something! This past week it has felt like if it's not one thing it's another with me.

I'm sorry you're having to recover from both the hernia and the WLS. Do talk to your surgeon tomorrow and let him know you can't eat anything and how it feels. Strictures aren't out of the question this early out, so really press him to check for that. I hope things work out quickly.

My surgeon told me I'd have a rougher recovery than normal because of the hiatal hernia repair. I did okay on soft foods but put off regular food until 7 weeks out at his suggestion. Mine was tiny, too.

I had 2 large hernias which were repaired when I had my RNY.  I never had any problem with eating or drinking.  So I'm not sure they are related.  I would call.  It's no fun to be sick.  In the mean while, take small sips, warm liquid and just stay at it.  Do you have something for nausea?  Take it if you need it.  Our soft foods included yogurt, thin creamed soups, thin mashed potatoes.  Think the consistancy of honey not really solid.

Hope you are doing better soon.

I had a hernia repaired too with my surgery..the surgeon said it was the largest one he had ever seen...I had a really hard time swallowing just about anything for a long time after..he said that it would feel "tight" because of how large it was..but I never felt a lump in my throat..when in doubt I would always call to double check..

So I called the surgeon today.  He is sending me to the hospital for an endoscopy this afternoon.  He says the stricture may need to be stretched and this is normal after RNY and hernia repairs.  I tell ya, between this and the constipation (easy fix) I need some relief and some good sleep.

All I want is to be back to normal. I don't mean being able to eat like I did before surgery or even eat the same foods.  Just normal, feel good normal.  I know this is temporary but right now, this moment...all I can do is sigh.

The surgeon sent me to the hospital and did an endoscopy.  He found that the opening to my pouch had "overhealed" and was the size of a pin hole.  That explains the swallowing issue and the gagging issues too.  He went in and expanded the opening with a balloon.  So far so good.  I am sipping a cup of clear chicken broth slowly cos my throat is sore.  He said I should see a big difference now.  I can already feel a difference - I don't feel like I'm gagging or choking.   I'm hoping things are going to look up for me now.
