High Blood Sugar?

I have been having some dizzy spells today so I decided to check my blood sugar.  I ate lunch about 2 or 3 hours ago and I just had a double protein shake about an hour ago.
The first time I took it it was 277!  That freaked me out so I recalibrated the monitor and took it again.  It was about 220.  I took it 2 more times and it was consistently about 220.  Now I am freaking out.
I have nothing with sugar in it.  My protein shakes are low sugar and low carb and I use low carb milk.  Should I call my doctor?

Here are some suggestions for additional testing before contacting your DR....or you could just contact them anyway

I know others will respond that are more familiar with surgar issues, but from what I know, that's definitely an out of boundries reading.

You should see your doctor, and in the meantime, start documenting your blood sugar readings to share with him.  The only other thought I have is to make sure your test strips are not old.  I've heard you can get inaccurate readings with old strips.

Thank you.  I just checked and they expire 8/2011 so it's close.  I also rechecked my blood sugar after about an hour and it is around 100 now.  Strange.  I am going to keep an eye on it.  It is the kind that has a memory so all the results are in there.  If it continues to do strange things I will definitley contact my doctor.  I am also going to use a new package of strips and see if that is it.

Expired strips or an out of whack meter can cause off readings...also before testing, use the control solution to check the meter. Make sure your code on the box matches the one plugged into the meter and WASH YOUR HANDS...amazingly not washing after picking up something or wiping your hands dry on a kitchen towel can also affect the readings.

IF with fresh strips and clean hands, you still get odd readings, then it's time to get the doctor involved. I had an endo tell me once that even the best controlled diabetic can have once in a while high readings for no explanable reason.

But first, get some new strips, check the battery in the meter, make sure the code is plugged in properly, and wash those hands!!!

I know nothing about blood sugar but if you get a high reading with new strips, call your Dr.  I don't think it is anything to mess around with.

Dizzy, could you BP be low?

My blood sugar is pretty normal now but the results are inconsistent, varying up to 20 in a matter of minutes so I am assuming it's my meter because I used newer strips.  I think I am going to buy another meter to be sure.
My blood pressure is normally pretty low.  I meant to check it at the store earlier but I forgot.  I am pretty sure that is the reason for my dizzyness.

First off, why buy a meter? Cant you either get one from your doctor or get a prescription for one - insurance pays for them.  They are expensive and you shouldn't have to pay out of pocket.  My Endocrinologist always give them to patients - we just had to get a prescription for strips and lancets.

As far as your high blood sugars  - even though your shakes are low sugar, low carb - they still have sugar.  Milk has sugar and protein powder has some sugar - may not be alot but has some.  I don't know if you put anything else in it like fruit but it is possible if you take it one hour after to get a reading like that.  If it is 3 hours later and you aren't diabetic, then either there is something wrong with the meter or you need to talk to your doctor about your sugars.

I would call the doctor on Monday and get a script for new strips and either ask for a new meter if they have them or ask for a script.  If you see an Endocrinologist anything - they do have them for patients.

My shake has 19 grams of carbs and 3 grams of sugar.  That may be the problem because today when I checked my blood sugar about an hour after I drank it my blood sugar was 176.
I got the meter because I am paranoid about reactive hypoglycemia.  It seems so many post ops have it I want to stay on top of it.  I didn't ask my doctor because I haven't been diagnosed with anything and I figured my insurance wouldn't pay without a diagnosis.
I got the first meter on Craigslist for about $20 and it came with the meter, lancets and about 300 strips.  I got another at Walmart and it cost $9 for the meter and $9 for 20 strips.  Not a lot of money to monitor my health

$9 for a blood sugar meter? What type of meter did you get and $9 for the strips?  Something doesnt sound right.  Those things are usually really really expensive.

I don't understand how a shake with milk can only have 3 grams of sugar?  8 ounces of milk has anywhere from 8 to 11 grams of sugar, so unless you are using a tiny bit of milk and the protein powder has absolutely no sugar at all?

3 grams of sugar shouldn't be enough to bring your sugar up to 176 -
