Yes, you can get a prescription for a meter but it's just as easy to get a free one without a prescription and almost every meter I've had came with some test strips and lancets.
It's not the meters that are expensive, it's the strips that they make money off of and what you need the prescription for...you can actually get meters for free or a minor cost even without a prescription.

And many times the drugstores will have a rebate on a monitor equal to the actual price...thus making it free.
The reason free meters are so easy to come by is that the manufactures know that since test strips are NOT interchangable from one company to another, they WILL get their money back in test strips.
Another source...if there is a Health Fair going on, go by and see the diabetes supply reps and scarf up a few...we've managed to keep me supplied in free meters for over 10 years...I've only paid for two that I know of and both of those were reduced dramatically on a rebate basis.

I would suggest contacting your doctor for a blood test that can measure your HgA1C. Also, are you sure your machine is calibrated correctly? That might be the problem. Either way, I think that you should contact your doctor. I would rather be safe, than regretting that I waited so long, if there is a problem.

I have been testing normal since then so I don't know. I also picked up a different meter from Walmart and compared the two readings and they are about the same so I think it was right. Maybe it was some kind of fluke? I'm going to keep an eye on it and if it happens again I will call my doctor.

It's better but I got a little dizzy today. I am pretty sure it is due to low blood pressure. I checked my bp this morning and it was 94/64, not too low but I think it drops when I stand up- orthostatic hypotension. I've had it for years and was told that there was nothing that could be done about it. It was worse yesterday but a lot better today.

Have you seen a cardiologist about your orthostatic hypotension? There is medication for it - it is called flurinef. I had it many years ago, it is very common with people who have chronic fatigue syndrome which I was diagnosed with in 1996. Now I just have low BP but I don't get dizzy with it. I was hospitalized last month after having surgery for kidney stones and my blood pressure was 85/48 - I felt fine but the nurses were going nuts. They didnt' want me walking the halls. I had to get the doctors to tell them it was okay that I always have low pressure and as long as I wasn't dizzy, to let me alone.
I asked my PCP about it and he said they didn't do anything to treat it. I will ask about that medication. I just figured I would have to live with it. It isn't too troublesome most of the time. In fact, I went several weeks without any dizzy spells. Then I had several yesterday and a few today.
