Sour stomach? week and half post op

I'm a week and a half out from Band to RNY revision.  I've progressed nicely on my surgeon's diet -- clear liq, full, then puree.  No throwing up or severe nausea.  However, my mouth started tasting sour a few days ago and hasn't let up.  It goes away briefly when I eat something. Water tastes very sour.  I've tried strong drinks (eg Crystal lite) and weak drinks (water with lemon) but all make me feel rather yucky and I have that sour taste.  I've started chewing half sticks of gum and then spitting out but as soon as I do the taste comes back.  I've taken Tums and it doesn't seem to help.  I'm still on the prilosec prescribed for after surgery.   Is this common and does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Ramie

Sounds to me like you're in Ketosis... its a fat burning mode and you do get kind of a tinny taste in your mouth.  It can last for quite awhile, especially as you are losing weight quickly.

I know there are some remedies, and I'm sure someone will chime in.

Thanks Jody, that helps a lot.  After your reply I did a search and read all sorts of posts on ketosis, and the tinny taste in my mouth (and funny smelling breath and urine) would certainly point to that. However, I've certainly had some carbs in my diet in the last few days.  Maybe not a lot, but certainly some.  There's the milk in my protein shake.  This morningI had about 2 oz of canned pears.  A couple teaspoons of tomato sauce on my ricotta bake for lunch.  Can I still be in ketosis even after eating all those carbs?

Thanks,
Ramie

Stick out your tongue and see if it is white.  If it is, you have thrush.  It is pretty common after surgery and makes everything taste horrible.  if that is it, call your dr and get a script.  I got something that was losenges to dissolve in my mouth 5x a day, 10 days.  Worked and the awful taste was gone after a few days.

Interesting idea, but I don't think I have it.  My tongue isn't white and I don't have any other symptoms of thrush.  Thanks for the suggestion and glad I had the chance to check my symptoms against the definition.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Thanks!
Ramie

I'm glad you are still taking the prilosec.  I actually had to take two daily right after surgery.  Everything tasted yucky to me at the beginning and it lasted a few weeks.

I hope you get it figured out.

I would think gum would make it worse because of the saliva.  Maybe try tiny breath mints.
