Freaking Out About My Blood Sugar
So I wrote about how I had checked my blood sugar after having a protein shake and it was over 250. I was sure that was wrong so I even went out and bought a new meter. Usually when I check my blood sugar it is normal, about 100 pretty consistently except after my protein shake. Today I drank my shake and checked my blood sugar again and it was 311! WTF??? Do I call my doctor? Stay away from my protein shake?
I did the stats on it and it is 19 grams of carbs and 3 grams of sugar? Is that too many carbs? The strange thing is I feel ok after I drink it. I only checked it before because I had been having dizzy spells.
I am scared to death of reactive hypoglycemia. Isn't that when your blood sugar spikes and then drops fast? So far it doesn't seem to be dropping fast. When this happened before my blood sugar was about 100 after about 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
Should I be concerned? I will call my doctor on Monday but do I need to call before that?

Sounds like your protien shake is a problem....maybe you should try a carb free one like syntax nectars and see how those affect your BS...you should definitely contact your dr too!

I just checked online and the protein powder only has 1.5 carbs per serving and I have 2 scoops, and it is fat free. The milk is low carb and has 3. The rest is from the chocolate and caramel sugar free sauces.
If I mixed it with water it would only be 3 grams for 2 scoops.
Maybe the sugar alcohol in the sugar free sauces? Does that affect blood sugar?

Sugar alcohols aren't *supposed* to affect you blood sugar the same way as real sugar, but what I know is using a lot of SA stops my weight loss just like rel carbs and it makes me go out of ketosis on the pee stick
Maybe it affects different people differently?
But the reality is, that for people withpout diabetes no matter how much sugar they eat, their blood sugar stays normal cause the pancreas puts out enough insulin to cover the amount. For diabetics, their body no longer responds to whatevery limited amount of insulin their pancreas manages to put out so there is always sugar showing in their blood.
I would say stay awy from the SA and maybe the shake altogether for the weekend and call on Monday for sure. It is defintely not normal.
Maybe try the shake with out the SA and check your sugar...get a feel for various scenarios the rest of the weekend.

Ladytazz, how about posting the brand of protein (as well as flavor) and also post the brand of low carb milk please...may be able to see what the culprit is if we see them.
