I had a friend with a staple issue and she was in ICU for about 2 weeks, total hospital over a month. The positive is that now she is fine. She recovered, lost all her weight and really, after getting over that which was a biggie, has had no other issues. So there really is light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully it will happen for you real soon.
We all know there are possibilities of complications, we just never think they are going to happen to us. I'm sorry you were the one and at this point, you deserve to be remorsefull. I hope you don't feel that way in a year.
