Protein Shakes...HELP!
Okay, so I am trying to stock my pantry with things I will be able to eat/drink after surgery since several people suggested having things on hand so that I don't have to go shopping before I feel up to it. So, here is my dilemma...I have about 6 canisters of protein shake mix from HMR (a medically supervised diet plan). These are about $30/each, so I hate to waste them. However, from what I have read, they are on the high end for sugar, and low for Protein. Here is the nutritional info:
Cal. 120; Sodium: 15; Potassium 400; Carbs 16, Sugar 14, Whey Protein 11
Should I try it after surgery to see if my new tummy will tolerate it, or is this not gonna cut it? I really do LIKE these shakes, but with all the sugar, who wouldn't! Any suggestions?
Everything is a lot sweeter after surgery, you make hate them, and the sugar content may make you dump, why not use what you can now, and decide what to do with the rest later?
That said, please do not stock up on any 1 protein powder, just because you like it right now does not mean you will like it after surgery. My advice is to get a lot of samples, so you are "stocked up" but not having abundance of items that don't agree with you.
I had a couple I stuck to right out, those were the ones in the Syntrax Nectar line (tend to be fruity) and the EAS AdvantEdge (which you can get RTD at any store with pharmacy type items ie Target, WalMart, Harris Teeter, WalGreens etc). Drink them extra cold or they aren't as good.
Below is a list of people who will give you free or cheap samples, all you have to do is ask them, I highly reccommend this route:

I like knowing things and saving money :)
A friend and I just started asking around somewhere between her surgery and mine, we've been keeping a list ever since whenever we find something awesome and a person who will give/sell samples. I give the list to all the pre-ops at my support group and share it whenever i come across questions like this one.
Variety is the answer to save your sanity!!!
I'm with the other posters. I foolishly bought several tubs of Protein that I still can't drink 4 years out. Everything tasted stronger, sourer, and sweeter for awhile after surgery. I also would not waste money on Protein drinks that are under 20 grams per serving., have sugar and a lot of carbs.
Even foods are going to taste different. I needed really bland food. I couldn't even eat popsicles or take the orange flavored vitamins after surgery.
I would get a bottle of liquid Tylenol, a good book, cloth tape measure, good weight scale, measuring cups, small plate, Protein mixer cup (with wire ball in it), a small blender, and a notebook to blog about your experience and keep track of your stats because as time goes by you WILL forget the details and the timeframe of what and when everything happened.
Take before/after pictures and take your measurments before surgery.

We were on Optifast before surgery and were told absolutely, do not drink them after surgery. Same kind of thing. Drink up and use them before your surgery then order samples for after.
