Drinking question

Ok so I have been having an issue with getting enough fluids in. I am doing better.

My question is this, The drinking after eating, some say half hour some say hour. An hour is way too long for me, how important is this rule and I realize it pushes the food through your stomach faster and "we feel hungry faster because of it" but I don't get hungry faster, altho I have been not drinking but I wasn't a real "hungry" type person to begin with. I have control over the hunger. Anyway, is that the only reason not to drink with or just after meals? Does it hurt out pouch or stoma?

I am not drinking right after eating but I have been only waiting 30 minutes. But curious.

I thought that by pushing the food through your pouch too fast it might stretch the stoma. Just a theory.

We were told 1/2 hr.  I go longer than that sometimes now but I think I was about 1/2 hr early out.  I don't know if you would stretch your stoma doing it but you have already lost a lot of digestive ability and you want to give your food as long as possible to digest in your stomach before pushing it out.

I was told 1/2 hour by doctor and two nutritionists. It can help slide the food away. One thing I do is that I make sure I drink for the 1 hour up to 1/2 before every meal, that way I'm sure to get in my liquids. After eating, I'm not that thirsty but I also tend to avoid real salty foods.

For me it was 1/2 hour before and after early post-op, and in maintenance they recommend an hour after.  Yes, I've also heard it can stretch your stoma, but the main reason is to let you feel full longer - and not push the food through too quickly.

I also find if I DO drink up until I eat, then wait, I'm not nearly as thirsty afterwards.  I read something quite awhile ago about "water loading" and that basically was drinking water up until you ate. I found that did work for me.  I tended to get real thirsty while/after eating if I don't have enough fluids before-hand.

Something that helps me, if I'm thursty after a meal, is I chew s/f gum.  Then I can go the full hour without being thursty.  Caution, some Drs discourage gum, but mine doesn't.

Thank you everyone, I will try the gum idea and drinking up till eating. I was one of those ppl who would carry a water bottle with me all the time. Always drinking. And ALWAYS drinking with meals. Its a habit I struggle with but not impossible to break. I just have to deal with it and make new habits. :)
