Family worried

My daughter is not pleased with my plan to have GBS. I haven't told anyone else except my husband and he is okay with it. My BMI is 35 and I have high blood pressure and feet problems from carrying too much weight. Menopause has helped to add 70 extra pounds which I can't get rid of. Is the surgery worth it?

Surgery has changed my life but is certainly not without risks.  Research, research, research, only you can make the final decision :)

Worth it. Take advantage of your honeymoon period, get the weight off and then maintenance follows. You can do this.

Have it...

As far as your daughter is concerned...tell her you understand her concern but this is something you and your doctor decided you needed to do to be healthy.

I had many foot problems (neuropathies, surgeries, stress fractures that wouldn't completely heal) and when the foot doctor said to my complaints of gaining more and more weight, "Once the feet go, the rest goes. It's difficult to get ahead of it and if you don't, it'll get you in the end." Although I also have a back problem, the foot issues really slowed me down. It took 3 months after surgery but my feet appear to be completely healed. I can walk easily for 20-30 minutes without the slightest issue. I can go up and down stairs normally whereas I was doing it by one step at a time. Yes, the surgery is worth it!

Personally, I had higher BMI and more co-morbidities and it was absolutely worth it.  But I think back to my mother who had arthritus and that stopped her from moving around.  Because she couldn't move much, everything else stopped working the way it should have and she ended up dying.  Feet are very important because they keep us mobile.  If surgery and getting the weight off will make your feet better, go for it.  If you can get approved, and you think it is the right thing and are committed to a new lifestyle, go for it.

Thanks everyone...your comments really help! I have Plantars Fasciitis which isn't really helped with surgery. The doctor gave me a wrap and inserts for my shoes. Christmas shopping with my husband is going to be a chore today with my painful feet! I usually love Christmas shopping!

I had the DS last week, with a BMI of 35.  I knew that I would just face criticism from friends/family so I didn't tell them.  Basically this is my decision, about my health, and I chose to do it FOR myself, BY myself. Do the research, decide what is best for you, and then pray for peace!
