I am going to be having RNY. My surgeons plan has me starting a multivitamin twice a day after a week and a half. Then at one month I will start all the others. The only thing I know about separating them is that iron and calcium need to be taken 2 hours apart. I havent heard about taking iron and vit c together, but you want to make sure your calcium has vit d added or is taken with vit d to help absorb it.

Start as soon as you can tolerate them...

I was almost a month out before getting most of mine in...

Just do what you can this early one...liguids and rest and walking are your biggest priority. The rest will get there in time.

Im not a DSer or a vet, but I don't think that should disqualify me from answering that vitamin C taken with carbonyl iron significantly aids in the iron absorption.  And as stated above, iron should not be taken within at least 2 hours of calcium - taking those two together prevent the absorption of one.

Thanks for clarifying the vitamin c and iron thing. I have never heard that before.

I count myself as very luck immediately post-op. I had no nausea and was able to take capsules, and horse pills too if I cut them in half....one at a time with a small sip of clear liquid. We were told to start with our multivitamins, D3 and calcium for the first couple of weeks before we started to add other things. I was also able to take zinc and selenium with no issues.

Anyway, if you're going to be on something like Vitalady's DS vitamin plan, or something close, start slowly...very slowly. I wouldn't start adding iron until you are comfortable with the basics and then start adding 1 capsule a wee****il you can get to the full 300mg dose Vitalady recommends. You want to avoid ferrous sulfate iron at all costs. It's pretty useless to us and could give you stomach issues. You want heme, carbonyl, polysaccharide or fumerate forms of iron. I was told with our fast transit times and short gut, we can space our vitamins as close as an hour apart...totally up to you. Good luck!
