4 days post op...... OH DEAR JESUS.
Please be honest with me, if I am over doing it, or not doing enough, go right ahead be honest:
Fri: 3pm home from hospital
4pm, 2 oz of warm water to disolve a carafate.
5pm 2 oz of chicken brothe from unjury (7grams).
6:30pm 1oz water & Pain pill,
7-8 pm 2 oz raspberry ice crystal light.
8:30pm 2 oz fuzzy navel nectar (6grams)
12am: pain pill w/2 oz water. Had sippy of crystal light and 3 oz of water by my bed. Only drank about a 1/4 of it. UP at 3:30am (see below)
3:30-5:30 I walked about 500 steps. Could not get comfortable. So I baked my Mother a banana cake. (the smell was heavenly). I ate about a small pea size of the icing. (it hurt really bad).
SO far today: 4am pain pill w/percoset & 2 oz of water. 5:30 Carafate dissolved in 2 ounces of warm water, 5:30-6:30 2ounces of Chicken B (7 grams) 1/2 of a sippy cup drank and a nexium, multi vitamin, and calcium have all been taken.I was on IV fluids until 3pm at hospital. Still VERY swollen. I do feel like I am sipping all of the time.
You're doing fine. Concentrate on the fluids. Take it slow. (((hugs)))

Yeap, baking the cake is WAY overdoing it...stop it!
Also, don't bother counting your steps at this point, that comes later if you want to worry about that.
You had about 13 oz of fluid yesterday after you got home. You need to go put 8 8oz bottles made up each day and drink every one of them. Yes, it means sipping all day long but that is your job right now.
A friend who had the DS about 6 months ahead of me told me to do that and it helps...having the bottles marked and going thru each one each day. Actually her husband made them up each morning for her the first two weeks.
You'll get there, just don't want you to end up back in the hospital due to dehydration or end up with a hernia from straining.

it does get better, I promise. Keep doing the pain meds as long as you need them. It is much harder to catch up on it if it gets ahead of you.
We were told 1 ounce every 15 minutes and were given 1 ounce cups to use. I never used them, just kept that in mind with my cup/bottle. Getting your fluids in is your job right now. I did better with room temp or warm than cold. I have never liked plain water and I thought it was wonderful. Everything else tasted too strong. Remember you can dilute crystal light, broth, whatever if you need to. Just get it in.
I was swollen for days, not to worry.
Walk, sip, rest, repeat.

Welcome Home!!!
I was told to sip all day long. Being Honest....DON'T start taking bites of NO NO foods unless they are allowed on your menu.

thank you ladies. I have drank 68 ounces of fluid!!!! Since 6am. I didn't drink much yesterday, but I was on IV fluids until 4pm and was sore from traveling home.
Making tacos for my family tonight. Just tried a sweet potato broth from one of the 'sites'. GROSS. lol. I do like unjury chicken broth.
My 'problem' right now is that the carafate that they gave me (liquid) to drink 4 times a day before meals!!!! They gave it to me in pill form. GROSS to try and swallow.
Going to appeal with insurance tuesday. They should cover it. Woulnd't cover my zofram either.
I'm glad you are feeling better...glad to hear you got fluid in you.
You may have to switch to one they do approve. I know that mine is picky about which PPI's it allows. Carafate was not on the list, I had one month of it then went to something else. Your surgeon's office KNOWS what is allowed for insurance...you may be able to get them to allow the Nexium that is in a packet that you dissolve in water. You still may have a higher co-pay with most of them but they may allow it.
The good news is that after the first couple of weeks, you can handle the pills (or should be able to).

I am 2 weeks post op and it gets MUCH better every day...I promise.
Walk, and stick to liquids until you "feel" ready to do any more.
My Doctor had me on clear liquids for 1 week, I am now on full liquids for 2 weeks, then pureed food for 3 weeks...that's 6 weeks before I get any real food...baby steps...and let your new tiny stomach heal.
Good luck, i look forward to seeing posts on your progress.
Be easy on yourself, your body has just been thur a lot, but it will all be worth it. Two weeks out and I feel great!
Baking a cake too dangerous for a sweet lover barely out of surgery - for me that would be torture and self-defeating. It was kind of you to do a favor for your Mom, but if you are a compulsive overeater, tempting fate. Even little tastes are out of the question at this point. Instead of a cake maybe a lovely card or message would have been a better solution.
I have a friend who had surgery and it was Not her idea. She's a delightful, pretty woman married to a man who wants a slim woman - therefore she was undergoing surgery for someone else. Her doctor told her she could eat soft foods - and did she ever. At a party not long after her surgery, she was eating ice cream, cake and anything soft sugary thing. Her friends were dismayed! She lost about 20 lbs and sadly, has put it all back on.
Please look at yourself and determine where you are in the scheme of healthy eating and following the doctor's directions. I relied heavily on ObesityHelp. I'm six years out 76 years old, weigh 128 and wear a size 8. The journey has not been easy - and I have been up and down within the 100 lb loss. Good luck, positive thoughts and hugs to you. You can do this! DeVonne
