Figuring out Excess Weight
I'm not sure how my doctor figure the excess weight. I'm 5'3" and I was given a "goal" at 3 mo post op of 156. 156 would have been 75% of excess weight loss according to their office and I would be considered a "success" by their standards.
That means I had an excess weight of 112 lbs if my math is correct and that was with their starting weight for me of 240.
It would have given me a bmi of 23.3 which is in the normal range. How they determine which number is the normal range is ideal to determine excess is beyond me.
Going by my doctor's math for you to be a similar bmi at your height it would be about 124 pounds.
I'm hoping a vet chimes in here about how they figure it because I have no clue.
Typically it's figured by using a BMI of 25. A few programs use a different number but 99% of insurance companies use 25 and most programs do too.

Starting BMI 40-ish or less? Join the LightWeights
My doc used the insurance tables, which at 5'1", would give me a goal weight of 115. I started at 195, so 195-115=80. Eighty pounds of excess weight and Expected Weight Loss (EWL) of 80 pounds. It sounds like every practice does this "EWL" thing a little differently.

Different surgeon's use different methods. You can start by using what would be a normal BMI for your height which is between 132 and 133. (132 is a 24.9, 133 is a 25.1)
That means by that figure you have 89 lbs to lose to reach normal.
