Shock to everyone...how do I deal?
I have been approved for surgery! I have been doing so much research on the DS. Silently reading threads for over 6 months now. I feel the DS is perfect for me. I finally went for my pre-op testing, I passed the surgical evaluation!! Now the nervousness is setting in and thinking about how I'll be after surgery. My question is, if i am choosing not to tell people about my WLS, how do I respond to people for my rapid weight loss? What did you say to people?

Just tell them you are losing weight under a doctor's care (which is not a lie) and that you are changing what and how much you eat. (which is also not a lie).
Most will accept that but if they do press for details, just change the subject.
And CONGRATS!

I was pretty open about it. there were some folks who I just said the above but most folks I told. It made life easier and although I had folks tell me much later that they had been concerned, I didn't get negative and flack from anyone.

If you are not telling because you are worried about their reactions, then I would not tell them before but after I would tell them like this:
I HAD WLS AND IT'S THE BEST THING I EVER DID FOR MYSELF
And then smile really big! (And maybe do a Happy Dance)
Most people won't go all Nelly Negative if you put it like that. The worst they'll do is make that face. Just laugh at them if they do that.

I told anyone and everyone who would listen...Esp. as a lightweight, I think it is good to educate people...that this is not the "easy way out"..but a great choice for those who are ready to use a tool wisely to change their lives.
Someone shared with me...and it inspired me to look into this as an option..so I was hoping I would be able to "pay it forward: and inspire someone else..and it worked, I have a friend who is now exploring her surgery options.
To "heck" with anyone who is less than supportive. & Good for you for doing this for yourself!! Good luck on your journey...
I had surgery 2 months ago, and have only told about 5 people. My response when they ask is that "I am eating mostly protein, very little carbs, eating every couple of hours, and limiting the number of calories I have each day". All of these things are true! (even though I don't count calories, I certainly eat a lot less of them!). There is one friend who I see everyday who caught on more to how I was "feeling" and after a few weeks she was really worried and thought I needed to see a dr. So, I finally told her simply because I didn't want her to worry. Plus, you would be surprised how long it takes people to notice. I was 190 at surgery, and honestly I was about 150 before people really started noticing. They don't' know how long it took me to lose that weight, and nobody has ever asked that!
