Calories?
I can only speak for myself. But, when I was eating just after surgery I never counted calories. That was mostly because I was eating so little and knew my calories were low. NOW, I'm 3.5 years out, trying to lose pounds I gained post surgery, so I count EVERYTHING.
Hope that helps a bit.

35 pounds of regain!!! 30 lost!!! Just a little more to go.
We weren't suppose to count calories but I used the tracker on this site and it did it for me. If you keep your protein up and your carbs down, you should be fine.

What I see is that in the first 6 months, it works fine just to track protein and carbs. It's after that that it doesn't work for everyone. Some people at 6 months can easily eat 1500 or more calories a day and for many of them, that's maintenance calories and they stop losing.
My program had us count everything and I'm glad. It helped me learn what food choices had the most value so later on when I could eat a lot more, I had good habits of what to eat to keep my calories down. I still track my food off and on in maintenance so I still track everything but usually I'm only concentrating on 1-2 things.
